Rhinoplasty Aberdare Wales (CF44): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be undertaken for personal reasons, following an injury, due to a birth defect or in order to aid breathing problems. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Aberdare, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Aberdare
In reconstructive rhinoplasty the objective is to address issues with breathing from external injuries or natural causes. A person who has difficulty in breathing during exercise, or is suffering from sleep apnoea, could have an underlying issue such as a nasal obstruction. Examination will be required by a doctor to determine the exact cause, which may be attributable to any one of a number of factors.
A major contributing factor in many cases is septal deviation, when the midline wall of the nose (the septum) is crooked or pushed to one side. Septorhinoplasty, a type of surgery, can help to realign the septum and address any other underlying issues. Inserting cartilage grafts in key internal areas of the nasal passage is one way to strengthen the shape of the nose and septum.
Reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty are usually performed by a qualified surgeon under general anaesthetic, and most patients can look forward to returning home the same day as their surgery. If the procedure isn't too complicated, the surgeon might suggest using a local anaesthetic, but this will be reviewed during your consultation. The operation involves making an incision at the base of the nose to provide access to the inside. In many situations, the bones don't need to be broken; instead, they're reshaped and adjusted to improve airflow and align the septum. At this point, cartilage might be removed or adjusted to make the nose stronger and give it a more balanced shape. To aid recovery, splints or casts may be fitted to keep the nose stable and help reduce any swelling.
The incisions for nose surgery are made carefully to minimise scarring. Most people won't see any visible scars once they've healed. Recovery takes about a week or two. During this time, you'll need to rest and avoid strenuous activity. Applying ice to the area and following a nasal cleaning routine can help speed up healing.
You'll need a follow-up appointment to take off any splints or casts from your nose, and by this time, you should be ready to go back to work and your normal daily activities. Just keep in mind that it's best to steer clear of contact sports or any activities where your nose might accidentally get hit, such as racquet games or ball sports, for about six to eight weeks post-surgery. After that, your nose should be healed enough for you to resume your usual routine.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Aberdare
If you are looking to change your nose for personal reasons, you would be considering what's called cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery, commonly known as a nose job. This surgery is classified as elective, so keep in mind that health insurance companies often don't cover its cost or any follow-up treatments. Still, it might be feasible to carry out cosmetic rhinoplasty at the same time as a reconstructive procedure that's insured or available through the National Health Service, just as long as you have a referral from your GP.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Aberdare:
- Reduce or widen nostril size.
- Removal of protrusions or humps.
- Reshape a twisted or curved nose.
- Removal of scars or blemishes.
- Reducing the width of the nasal bones.
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
Many of these issues, among others, can be managed through cosmetic rhinoplasty. However, before making any decisions, it's best to first consult your GP, followed by a consultation with a plastic surgeon in Aberdare. At that point, a personalised plan can be put together, with realistic expectations about the surgery's outcome. It's also worth noting that not all people are well-suited for cosmetic rhinoplasty. Individual factors like skin and bone structure, medical history, the risk of adverse reactions, or the chance of complications should all be weighed carefully.
Your surgeon will check you over to see what can be changed. They'll look at your skin, bone, and cartilage to figure out what's possible. They'll also think about how the surgery might affect your breathing. You'll need to talk about what you want from the surgery and why. It's totally normal to feel a bit awkward, but it's important to be honest and open with your surgeon. They need to know that you've thought about everything, including the risks and potential outcomes.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect After Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- Avoid running, jogging and other strenuous activities, contact sports in particular.
- Eat a high fibre diet until the end of the recovery period. This may seem a bit strange, but the theory is a high fibre diet will prevent constipation and therefore avoid the need for straining and resulting pressure in the surgery area.
- Try not to laugh or use extreme facial expressions.
- Don't wear contacts or glasses.
- To be mindful when brushing your teeth to avoid bumping and movement of the upper lip.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.

Recovery After Rhinoplasty
A rhinoplasty patient's post-operative recovery experience differs from person to person but common pattern of recovery is for all. Mostly patient come back in normal position within in a week after surgery but its some side effects can last for several weeks or even months and it should not cause discomfort to you. If you feel any discomfort after rhinoplasty surgery you can call the doctor directly through the contact numbers for emergencies provided by them.
After rhinoplasty surgery there is some discomfort you have to face. To overcome the pain your surgeon will provide you with medication to control the pain and the time taken is 5 to 10 days.
A splint will be applied after surgery to keep nose in position and also help in healing. About a week at your post-operative check up the splint will usually be removed by the surgeon. If open rhinoplasty was used or the nasal bones have been broken and reset then there will be some swelling. For the first few days there may be some swelling on your eyes and the doctor may advise that you use a cold compress to reduce the swelling. Mostly swelling and bruising will be not seen after some weeks but some swelling may be seen for several months but it is not noticeable by others. For the nose to come out in its final shape it take 9 to 12 months.
During the recovery period the nose may look crooked and this irregular appearance will not seen after healing. Only in some cases revision rhinoplasty is needed to correct. In these cases irregular shape of the nose is due to patients not keeping their heads sufficiently high during the rhinoplasty recovery period, patients having a bias to sleeping on one side causing the nose to heal with a lean, or the newly operated nose receiving a bump so the rhinoplasty surgeons advice the patients to raise the head all time mainly during sleeping and also try to sleep on your back until your nose has healed.
In rhinoplasty surgery nose bleeding is common and you feel congested and this condition can last several weeks. You also feel you have a cold but avoid blowing your nose for around 4 weeks after surgery and this can make worse the healing process. You also feel tenderness on the nose if you are going outside then it is good for you to wear sun block.
Between 1 to 3 weeks after the rhinoplasty surgery one will be fit for their work. You should have to not do any hard work for six weeks. The hard work may effect on the proper healing of your nose and may lead to revision rhinoplasty.
