Rhinoplasty Bovey Tracey Devon (TQ13): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be undertaken for personal reasons, because of a birth defect, after an injury or in order to aid breathing problems. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Bovey Tracey, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Bovey Tracey
In reconstructive rhinoplasty the intention is to treat problems with breathing from natural causes or external injuries. A person who has difficulty in breathing under exercise, or is suffering from sleep apnoea, might have an underlying issue like a nasal obstruction. A doctor's examination is essential to ascertain the cause, as there can be various reasons for these conditions
Septal deviation is a major contributing factor in many cases. This is caused by a crooked or pushed-to-one-side midline wall of the nose (the septum). Septorhinoplasty can help to address any underlying issues and realign the septum. Key internal areas of the nasal passage may be the site of cartilage graft insertion to strengthen the shape of the septum and nose.
Reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty are commonly carried out under general anaesthetic by a qualified surgeon, with most people able to return home the same day. If the surgery is straightforward, the surgeon may suggest a local anaesthetic, which will be discussed during the consultation phase. The procedure involves making an incision at the base of the nose to access the internal areas. In many cases, the bones of the nose are reshaped and adjusted rather than broken, allowing for improved breathing and septum alignment. During this stage, cartilage might be removed or adjusted to strengthen the nose and create a more uniform shape. Splints or casts may be used to help maintain the nose's shape, reduce swelling, and aid in recovery.
The areas where incisions are made at the base of the nose are carefully chosen to reduce visible scarring, and many patients do not see noticeable marks once healing is finished. Recovery times for reconstructive rhinoplasty are broadly similar, with patients advised to take one to two weeks of rest. This involves refraining from strenuous activities and heavy breathing for at least a week. Applying ice to the area and adhering to a directed nasal cleaning routine are helpful for recovery.
You'll have a follow-up appointment scheduled to take off any splints or casts from your nose, and by then, you should be ready to get back to work and your usual daily routine. Just a heads-up - you're advised to steer clear of contact sports or any activities that might put your nose at risk of being hit, such as racquet sports or ball games, for a period of six to eight weeks post-op. After that timeframe, your nose ought to be healed enough for you to carry on with life as you did before.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Bovey Tracey
If you are looking to change your nose for personal reasons, you would be considering what's called cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery, commonly known as a nose job. This surgery is classified as elective, so keep in mind that health insurance companies often don't cover its cost or any follow-up treatments. Still, it might be feasible to carry out cosmetic rhinoplasty at the same time as a reconstructive procedure that's insured or available through the National Health Service, just as long as you have a referral from your GP.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Bovey Tracey:
- Removal of scars or blemishes.
- Widen or reduce nostril size.
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Reshape a twisted or curved nose.
- Removal of protrusions or humps.
- Reduction in width of the nasal bones.
There are many reasons that can lead you to consider cosmetic rhinoplasty, but it's always best to start by discussing any surgical plans with your GP before seeking advice from an expert plastic surgeon in Bovey Tracey. From there, a personalised plan can be developed for you, along with a clear understanding of what to realistically expect from the surgery. Keep in mind, though, that not everyone is a good candidate for cosmetic rhinoplasty. This could be due to factors like individual skin and bone structure, medical history, risks of adverse reactions, or the potential for worsening the condition.
Your surgeon will conduct a physical examination to see which areas can be altered, focusing on the thickness of your skin, bone, and cartilage. This can also help predict any breathing changes that might occur after surgery. You'll need to talk about your expectations and why you want the rhinoplasty. It's normal to feel self-conscious at this point; after all, no one likes talking about their perceived flaws. But it's vital for the surgeon to know that you've considered the process carefully and understand the risks and potential outcomes.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect Following Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- Avoid jogging, running and other strenuous activities, especially contact sports.
- Try not to laugh or use extreme facial expressions.
- Eat a high fibre diet until the recovery period has ended. This might seem a bit strange, but the theory is a high fibre diet will prevent constipation and hence avoid any straining and subsequent pressure in the surgery area.
- Do not wear glasses or contact lenses.
- To be careful when brushing teeth to avoid bumping and movement of the upper lip.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.

Recovery After Rhinoplasty
A rhinoplasty patient's post-operative recovery experience differs from person to person but common pattern of recovery is for all. Mostly patient come back in normal position within in a week after surgery but its some side effects can last for several weeks or even months and it should not cause discomfort to you. If you feel any discomfort after rhinoplasty surgery you can call the surgeon directly through the contact numbers for emergencies provided by them.
After rhinoplasty surgery there is some discomfort you have to face. To overcome the pain your surgeon will provide you with medication to control the pain and the time taken is 5 to 10 days.
A splint will be applied after surgery to keep nose in position and also help in healing. About a week at your post-operative check up the splint will usually be removed by the surgeon. If open rhinoplasty was used or the nasal bones have been broken and reset then there will be some swelling. For the first few days there may be some swelling on your eyes and the doctor may advise that you use a cold compress to reduce the swelling. Mostly swelling and bruising will be not seen after some weeks but some swelling may be seen for several months but it is not noticeable by others. For the nose to come out in its final shape it take 9 to 12 months.
During the recovery period the nose may look crooked and this irregular appearance will not seen after healing. Only in some cases revision rhinoplasty is needed to correct. In these cases irregular shape of the nose is due to patients not keeping their heads sufficiently high during the rhinoplasty recovery period, patients having a bias to sleeping on one side causing the nose to heal with a lean, or the newly operated nose receiving a bump so the rhinoplasty surgeons advice the patients to raise the head all time mainly during sleeping and also try to sleep on your back until your nose has healed.
In rhinoplasty surgery nose bleeding is common and you feel congested and this condition can last several weeks. You also feel you have a cold but avoid blowing your nose for around 4 weeks after surgery and this can make worse the healing process. You also feel tenderness on the nose if you are going outside then it is good for you to wear sun block.
Between 1 to 3 weeks after the rhinoplasty surgery one will be fit for their work. You should have to not do any hard work for six weeks. The hard work may effect on the proper healing of your nose and may lead to revision rhinoplasty.
