Rhinoplasty Haslemere Surrey (GU27): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be undertaken for personal reasons, following an injury, so as to aid breathing problems or due to a birth defect. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Haslemere, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Haslemere
In reconstructive rhinoplasty the objective is to address issues with breathing from external injuries or natural causes. A person who has difficulty in breathing under exercise, or suffers from sleep apnoea, might have an underlying issue like a nasal obstruction. A doctor's examination is required to discover the cause, because there can be various reasons for these conditions
In many cases, a crooked or pushed-to-one-side midline wall of the nose (the septum) is a major contributing factor to septal deviation. Septorhinoplasty can help to address any underlying issues and realign the septum. Key internal areas of the nasal passage may be the site of cartilage graft insertion to strengthen the shape of the nose and septum.
Typically, reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty are performed under general anaesthetic by a qualified surgeon, allowing most individuals to return home on the same day as their procedure. If your surgery is straightforward, the surgeon may suggest a local anaesthetic, which will be confirmed during your consultation. The surgical process involves making an incision at the base of the nose to access the internal areas. Often, the bones of the nose do not need to be broken; rather, they are reshaped and adjusted to facilitate better breathing and align the septum. At this stage, cartilage might be removed or adjusted to strengthen the nose and create a more uniform shape. To aid recovery, splints or casts could be applied to help maintain the nose's shape and reduce swelling.
The locations for the incisions made at the base of the nose are selected with great care to minimise noticeable scarring; in fact, many patients find they don't have visible scars after their wounds have healed. Recovery times tend to be quite similar for all individuals undergoing reconstructive rhinoplasty, and typically they're advised to take it easy for one or two weeks. This means steering clear of any strenuous activities or heavy breathing, at least during the first week. Additionally, applying ice to the affected area can really help with recovery, alongside a specific nasal cleaning routine.
There will be a follow-up appointment to remove any splints or cast from your nose, and by this time, you should be able to return to work and your normal daily life. It's recommended to avoid contact sports or sports with a risk of your nose being struck (such as racquet sports, ball sports, etc.) for six to eight weeks after your operation. By then, your nose should have healed enough for you to continue life as before.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Haslemere
Reshaping your nose for personal reasons is referred to as cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery (or a nose job), and it's considered an elective surgery. This means that health insurance companies may not cover the cost of the procedure or any follow-up consultations. However, it might be possible to have cosmetic rhinoplasty along with a reconstructive operation covered by insurance or through the NHS, based on a GP's recommendation.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Haslemere:
- Reduction in width of the nasal bones.
- Reshape a twisted or curved nose.
- Removal of protrusions or humps.
- Removal of blemishes or scars.
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Widen or reduce nostril size.
There are many reasons that can lead you to consider cosmetic rhinoplasty, but it's always best to start by discussing any surgical plans with your GP before seeking advice from an expert plastic surgeon in Haslemere. From there, a personalised plan can be developed for you, along with a clear understanding of what to realistically expect from the surgery. Keep in mind, though, that not everyone is a good candidate for cosmetic rhinoplasty. This could be due to factors like individual skin and bone structure, medical history, risks of adverse reactions, or the potential for worsening the condition.
Your surgeon will examine you to see what's possible with rhinoplasty. They'll check your skin, bone, and cartilage, and consider any potential breathing changes after surgery. You'll also discuss your expectations and motivations for the procedure. It's okay to feel a bit nervous, but it's important to be open and honest with your surgeon. They need to know that you've thought about everything and are aware of the potential risks and benefits.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect Following Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- Do not wear glasses or contact lenses.
- Try not to laugh or use extreme facial expressions.
- Eat a high fibre diet until the end of the recovery period. This might seem a bit peculiar, but the theory is a high fibre diet will avoid constipation and consequently avoid the need for straining and subsequent pressure in the surgery area.
- To be cautious when brushing teeth to avoid movement and bumping of the top lip.
- Avoid jogging and other strenuous activities, especially contact sports.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.
