Rhinoplasty Trowbridge Wiltshire (BA14): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be required following an injury, in order to aid breathing problems, due to a birth defect or undertaken for personal reasons. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Trowbridge, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Trowbridge
In reconstructive rhinoplasty the intention is to address issues with breathing from external injury or natural causes. A person who has a nasal obstruction as an underlying problem could experience sleep apnoea or have trouble breathing during exercise. This can be down to a number of reasons and examination by a doctor is necessary to discover the precise cause.
Septal deviation is a major contributing factor in many cases. This is caused by a crooked or pushed-to-one-side midline wall of the nose (the septum). Surgery (known as septorhinoplasty) can help to realign the septum and address any other underlying issues that may be present. To strengthen the shape of the nose and septum, cartilage grafts may be inserted in key internal areas of the nasal passage.
Reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty are typically carried out under general anaesthetic by a qualified surgeon, and most patients can usually head home on the same day as their surgery. If the procedure isn't too complex, your surgeon might recommend using a local anaesthetic instead, but this will be discussed with you during your consultation. During the surgery, an incision is made at the base of the nose to provide access to the internal structures. In many instances, the bones of the nose don't need to be broken; instead, they are reshaped and adjusted to improve breathing and align the septum. At this point, some cartilage may be removed or modified to enhance the nose's strength and achieve a more uniform appearance. To support the healing process, splints or casts might be used to maintain the nose's shape, reduce swelling, and assist in recovery.
The points where incisions are made at the base of the nose are chosen with care to minimise noticeable scarring, and many patients will find that once healed, there are no visible scars. Recovery periods for reconstructive rhinoplasty are similar for everyone, with patients being advised to rest for one or two weeks. This means no exertion or heavy breathing for at least a week. Applying ice to the affected area can help with recovery, along with following a nasal cleaning programme.
You'll have a follow-up appointment to take off any splints or casts from your nose, and by this time, you should be able to get back to work and your regular daily life. However, it's wise to avoid contact sports or activities that might accidentally cause your nose to get hit - such as racquet sports or ball sports - during the six to eight weeks following your operation. After this time, your nose should be healed sufficiently for you to continue life as you did before.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Trowbridge
Known as a nose job, cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery is performed for personal reasons and is considered an elective procedure. Because of this, costs related to the surgery and any follow-up visits may not be included in health insurance coverage. Nevertheless, it could be feasible to have cosmetic rhinoplasty carried out alongside a reconstructive operation that falls under an insurance plan or is accessed through the National Health Service with a referral from your GP.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Trowbridge:
- Reduction in width of the nasal bones.
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Removal of blemishes or scars.
- Removal of humps or protrusions.
- Widen or reduce the size of the nostril.
- Reshape a curved or twisted nose.
Cosmetic rhinoplasty can address these reasons and more, but any decision about surgery should first be discussed with your GP, before consulting an expert plastic surgeon in Trowbridge. A tailored plan should then be created for you as an individual, with realistic expectations about the surgery's outcome. It's important to remember that not everyone is a suitable candidate for cosmetic rhinoplasty. This could be due to factors such as skin and bone structure, medical history, potential adverse reactions, or the risk of worsening the issue.
Your surgeon will examine you to see what's possible with rhinoplasty. They'll check your skin, bone, and cartilage, and consider any potential breathing changes after surgery. You'll also discuss your expectations and motivations for the procedure. It's okay to feel a bit nervous, but it's important to be open and honest with your surgeon. They need to know that you've thought about everything and are aware of the potential risks and benefits.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect Following Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- Do not wear contacts or spectacles.
- Eat a high fibre diet until the recovery period has ended. This might seem a bit peculiar, but the theory is a high fibre diet will avoid constipation and therefore avoid any straining and subsequent pressure to the surgery area.
- Avoid jogging, running and other demanding activities, in particular contact sports.
- To be cautious when brushing your teeth to avoid movement and bumping of the upper lip.
- Try not to laugh or use extreme facial expressions.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.
