Rhinoplasty Billingshurst West Sussex (RH14): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be required following an injury, due to a birth defect, in order to aid breathing problems or undertaken for personal reasons. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Billingshurst, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Billingshurst
Reconstructive rhinoplasty has the main intention of treating breathing issues which stem from external injuries or natural causes. A patient who has a nasal obstruction as an underlying problem may suffer from sleep apnoea or have difficulty in breathing under exercise. A doctor's examination is necessary to discover the cause, because this can be brought on by a number of reasons.
A major contributing factor in many cases is septal deviation, when the midline wall of the nose (the septum) is crooked or pushed to one side. Septorhinoplasty, a type of surgery, can help to realign the septum and address any other underlying issues. This may include inserting cartilage grafts in key internal areas of the nasal passage to strengthen the shape of the nose and septum.
Typically, reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty are performed under general anaesthetic by a qualified surgeon, allowing most individuals to return home on the same day as their procedure. If your surgery is straightforward, the surgeon may suggest a local anaesthetic, which will be confirmed during your consultation. The surgical process involves making an incision at the base of the nose to access the internal areas. Often, the bones of the nose do not need to be broken; rather, they are reshaped and adjusted to facilitate better breathing and align the septum. At this stage, cartilage might be removed or adjusted to strengthen the nose and create a more uniform shape. To aid recovery, splints or casts could be applied to help maintain the nose's shape and reduce swelling.
The points where incisions are made at the base of the nose are chosen with care to minimise noticeable scarring, and many patients will find that once healed, there are no visible scars. Recovery periods for reconstructive rhinoplasty are similar for everyone, with patients being advised to rest for one or two weeks. This means no exertion or heavy breathing for at least a week. Applying ice to the affected area can help with recovery, along with following a nasal cleaning programme.
There will be a follow-up appointment to remove any splints or cast from your nose, and by this time, you should be able to return to work and your normal daily life. It's recommended to avoid contact sports or sports with a risk of your nose being struck (such as racquet sports, ball sports, etc.) for six to eight weeks after your operation. By then, your nose should have healed enough for you to continue life as before.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Billingshurst
Cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery, often called a nose job, is the term used for reshaping a nose for personal reasons. It's important to note that this is considered elective surgery, so health insurance companies might not cover the costs of the procedure or any follow-up appointments and other treatments. That said, it's sometimes possible to combine cosmetic rhinoplasty with a reconstructive surgery that is being performed through an insurance scheme or via the National Health Service, as long as you have a referral from your GP.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Billingshurst:
- Reduce or widen nostril size.
- Removal of scars or blemishes.
- Reducing the width of the nasal bones.
- Removal of humps or protrusions.
- Reshape a curved or twisted nose.
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
You can consider cosmetic rhinoplasty for numerous reasons, but any decisions regarding surgery should be talked over with your GP initially, before consulting an expert plastic surgeon in Billingshurst. After that, a specific plan tailored to your individual needs should be created, along with a practical understanding of what the surgery could achieve. It's essential to remember that not all individuals will be ideal candidates for cosmetic rhinoplasty. This might relate to their skin and bone structure, medical background, chances of adverse reactions, or the risk of making the situation worse.
Before anything else, your surgeon is going to perform a physical examination to identify the areas that can be modified. This will provide insights into the thickness of your skin, cartilage, and bone, and could even help predict any changes in your breathing that might arise afterwards. They'll likely ask you about your expectations for the surgery and your reasons for wanting a rhinoplasty. It's natural to feel a bit self-conscious at this point because discussing things we see as imperfections can be uncomfortable. Still, it's really important for the surgeon to know that you've thought it all through and fully grasp the potential risks and consequences of the surgery.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect After Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- Don't wear spectacles or contacts.
- Try not to laugh or use extreme facial expressions.
- To be careful when brushing teeth to avoid bumping and movement of the top lip.
- Eat a high fibre diet until the recovery period has ended. This may seem a little peculiar, but the theory is a high fibre diet will prevent constipation and thus avoid any straining and resulting pressure to the surgery area.
- Avoid running, jogging and other strenuous activities, contact sports in particular.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.

Billingshurst Rhinoplasty Questions
Just last week I was looking at the sorts of questions that people ask with regards to rhinoplasty in Billingshurst. A good few of you sent in some understandable enquiries which are worthy of mentioning here. The ones that leaped out are, How long after rhinoplasty can I drink alcohol? What is rhinoplasty non surgical? How much do rhinoplasty consultations cost? When does rhinoplasty stop bleeding? How old should you be to get rhinoplasty? When can I breathe after rhinoplasty? How do you breathe during rhinoplasty surgery? The majority of these questions hopefully have been answered in the preceding article, and if that is not the case a rhinoplasty "Q&A" section is currently being created. Thanks to Roman Matthews, Kieran Armstrong, Ralphie Jarvis and Adriana Stanley from Billingshurst, for posing these questions. It was also brilliant to receive queries from Camila Conway in Wisborough Green, Eli Tait in Coneyhurst and Kylie Leigh in Slinfold.
