Rhinoplasty Shoreham-by-Sea West Sussex (BN43): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be required following an injury, in order to aid breathing problems, because of a birth defect or undertaken for personal reasons. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Shoreham-by-Sea, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Shoreham-by-Sea
In reconstructive rhinoplasty the aim is to address issues with breathing from external injury or natural causes. A person in Shoreham-by-Sea who's suffering from sleep apnoea or who has difficulty in breathing under exercise might have a nasal obstruction as the underlying issue. A doctor's examination is required to determine the cause, since this can be caused by a number of factors.
Septal deviation, when the midline wall of the nose (the septum) is crooked or pushed to one side, is a major contributing factor in many cases. Realigning the septum and addressing any other underlying issues can be done through septorhinoplasty surgery. This might include inserting cartilage grafts in key internal areas of the nasal passage to strengthen the shape of the septum and nose.
Reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty are generally performed under general anaesthetic by a qualified surgeon, and most people can expect to go home the same day as their surgery. If the surgery is relatively simple, the surgeon might suggest a local anaesthetic, and this will be discussed during your initial consultation. During the procedure, an incision is typically made at the base of the nose to access the internal areas. In most cases, there's no need to break the nose bones; they are reshaped and adjusted instead to improve breathing and align the septum. At this time, cartilage may be removed or modified to strengthen the nose and achieve a more uniform appearance. To support healing, splints or casts may be applied to maintain the shape of the nose, reduce swelling, and aid in recovery.
The careful placement of incisions at the base of the nose is intended to lessen the appearance of scarring, and most patients will find that there are no visible scars once they've healed. For patients undergoing reconstructive rhinoplasty, the recovery period is generally similar, with advice to rest for one to two weeks. This means avoiding any strenuous activity or heavy breathing for at least the first week. Applying ice to the affected area can be beneficial for recovery, along with a directed nasal cleaning programme.
You'll have a follow-up appointment to take off any splints or casts from your nose, and by this time, you should be able to get back to work and your regular daily life. However, it's wise to avoid contact sports or activities that might accidentally cause your nose to get hit - such as racquet sports or ball sports - during the six to eight weeks following your operation. After this time, your nose should be healed sufficiently for you to continue life as you did before.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Shoreham-by-Sea
Cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery, often called a nose job, is the term used for reshaping a nose for personal reasons. It's important to note that this is considered elective surgery, so health insurance companies might not cover the costs of the procedure or any follow-up appointments and other treatments. That said, it's sometimes possible to combine cosmetic rhinoplasty with a reconstructive surgery that is being performed through an insurance scheme or via the National Health Service, as long as you have a referral from your GP.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Shoreham-by-Sea:
- Reduction in width of the nasal bones.
- Reshape a curved or twisted nose.
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Removal of scars or blemishes.
- Removal of humps or protrusions.
- Reduce or widen nostril size.
Cosmetic rhinoplasty can address these reasons and more, but any decision about surgery should first be discussed with your GP, before consulting an expert plastic surgeon in Shoreham-by-Sea. A tailored plan should then be created for you as an individual, with realistic expectations about the surgery's outcome. It's important to remember that not everyone is a suitable candidate for cosmetic rhinoplasty. This could be due to factors such as skin and bone structure, medical history, potential adverse reactions, or the risk of worsening the issue.
Your surgeon will carry out a physical examination to evaluate which areas can be altered. This assessment will help determine the thickness of your skin, bone, and cartilage, and it may also assist in predicting any changes to your breathing that could happen after the surgery. During this time, you'll be asked about your expectations regarding the surgery and your reasons for wanting rhinoplasty. It's completely normal to feel a bit self-conscious at this stage; after all, discussing perceived imperfections isn't easy for anyone. However, it's crucial that the surgeon understands you have carefully considered the process and fully grasp the potential risks and outcomes associated with the surgery.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect Following Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- Avoid running, jogging and other demanding activities, contact sports in particular.
- Do not wear spectacles or contacts.
- To be careful when brushing your teeth to avoid movement and bumping of the top lip.
- Try not to use extreme facial expressions or laugh.
- Eat a high fibre diet until the recovery period has ended. This may seem a bit peculiar, but the theory is a high fibre diet will prevent constipation and hence avoid any straining and resulting pressure to the surgery area.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.

Rhinoplasty Recovery
A rhinoplasty patient's post-operative recovery experience differs from person to person but common pattern of recovery is for all. Mostly patient come back in normal position within in a week after surgery but its some side effects can last for several weeks or even months and it should not cause discomfort to you. If you feel any discomfort after rhinoplasty surgery you can call the surgeon directly through the contact numbers for emergencies provided by them.
After rhinoplasty surgery there is some discomfort you have to face. To overcome the pain your surgeon will provide you with medication to control the pain and the time taken is 5 to 10 days.
A splint will be applied after surgery to keep nose in position and also help in healing. About a week at your post-operative check up the splint will usually be removed by the surgeon. If open rhinoplasty was used or the nasal bones have been broken and reset then there will be some swelling. For the first few days there may be some swelling on your eyes and the doctor may advise that you use a cold compress to reduce the swelling. Mostly swelling and bruising will be not seen after some weeks but some swelling may be seen for several months but it is not noticeable by others. For the nose to come out in its final shape it take 9 to 12 months.
During the recovery period the nose may look crooked and this irregular appearance will not seen after healing. Only in some cases revision rhinoplasty is needed to correct. In these cases irregular shape of the nose is due to patients not keeping their heads sufficiently high during the rhinoplasty recovery period, patients having a bias to sleeping on one side causing the nose to heal with a lean, or the newly operated nose receiving a bump so the rhinoplasty surgeons advice the patients to raise the head all time mainly during sleeping and also try to sleep on your back until your nose has healed.
In rhinoplasty surgery nose bleeding is common and you feel congested and this condition can last several weeks. You also feel you have a cold but avoid blowing your nose for around 4 weeks after surgery and this can make worse the healing process. You also feel tenderness on the nose if you are going outside then it is good for you to wear sun block.
Between 1 to 3 weeks after the rhinoplasty surgery one will be fit for their work. You should have to not do any hard work for six weeks. The hard work may effect on the proper healing of your nose and may lead to revision rhinoplasty. The time of healing of rhinoplasty patients differ from person to person so to get quick recovery rhinoplasty surgery one should follow the doctor instructions.
