Rhinoplasty Whitby North Yorkshire (YO21): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be undertaken for personal reasons, due to a birth defect, so as to aid breathing problems or following an injury. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Whitby, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Whitby
The intention with reconstructive surgery is to address breathing issues that occur as a result of natural causes or external injuries. A patient who has difficulty in breathing during exercise, or is suffering from sleep apnoea, might have an underlying problem such as a nasal obstruction. Examination will be required by a doctor to ascertain the precise cause, which may be due to any one of a number of factors.
Septal deviation, when the midline wall of the nose (the septum) is crooked or pushed to one side, is a major contributing factor in many cases. Surgery known as septorhinoplasty can help to realign the septum and address any other underlying issues. The shape of the septum and nose may be strengthened by inserting cartilage grafts in key internal areas of the nasal passage.
Reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty are typically performed under a general anaesthetic by an experienced surgeon, with most patients returning home the same day. If the surgery is relatively simple, a local anaesthetic might be considered, and this will be discussed during the consultation stage. The procedure involves making an incision at the base of the nose to access internal areas. Usually, the nasal bones do not need to be broken; instead, they are reshaped and adjusted to improve breathing and septum alignment. Cartilage may be adjusted or removed to provide extra support and a consistent shape. Splints or casts are placed to help reduce swelling, maintain shape, and aid recovery.
Incisions at the base of the nose are placed very thoughtfully to help minimise any potential scarring, and many patients may not notice any visible scars after healing. Recovery times for those having reconstructive rhinoplasty are usually quite similar, with patients typically advised to take one to two weeks of rest. This includes steering clear of heavy exertion or intense breathing for at least a week. To help with recovery, it's recommended to use ice on the affected area, along with a guided nasal cleaning routine.
Don't forget that a follow-up appointment will be arranged to take off any casts or splints from your nose, and by that time, you should be good to return to work and your regular daily life. Remember to avoid engaging in contact sports or any sport where there's an accidental risk of your nose getting hit, such as racquet sports or ball activities, for a period of six to eight weeks post-operation. After that, your nose should be healed sufficiently, allowing you to resume life as usual.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Whitby
When someone wants to reshape their nose for personal reasons, it's referred to as cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery, commonly known as a nose job. This type of surgery is classified as elective, which means that your health insurance might not cover the expenses related to the procedure or any follow-up appointments. However, if you're undergoing reconstructive surgery that is covered by insurance or the National Health Service, it might be possible to have the cosmetic rhinoplasty done at the same time, but you'll need a recommendation from your GP.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Whitby:
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Widen or reduce the size of the nostril.
- Removal of humps or protrusions.
- Reshape a twisted or curved nose.
- Removal of blemishes or scars.
- Reduction in width of the nasal bones.
All sorts of reasons can be managed through cosmetic rhinoplasty, but the first step should always be a discussion with your GP regarding any surgical decisions prior to seeing an expert plastic surgeon in Whitby. Following that, a tailored plan should be created just for you, with a realistic outlook on what the surgery can achieve. It's also important to consider that not everyone might be a suitable candidate for cosmetic rhinoplasty. This could depend on an individual's skin and bone structure, their medical history, the likelihood of adverse reactions, or even the risk of aggravating the issue.
Your surgeon will carry out a physical examination to assess which areas might be adjusted. This will help them determine the thickness of your skin, bone, and cartilage, and it may also help predict any changes to your breathing after the surgery. You'll be asked about your expectations for the procedure and your reasons for wanting rhinoplasty. It's natural to feel self-conscious discussing what you might see as imperfections, but it's essential for the surgeon to know you've considered the process carefully and understand both the risks and potential outcomes of surgery.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect Following Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- To be mindful when brushing your teeth to avoid movement and bumping of the upper lip.
- Try not to use extreme facial expressions or laugh.
- Don't wear contact lenses or glasses.
- Avoid running, jogging and other demanding activities, in particular contact sports.
- Eat a high fibre diet until the recovery period has ended. This might seem a bit strange, however the theory is a high fibre diet will avoid constipation and consequently avoid any straining and subsequent pressure in the surgery area.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.
