Rhinoplasty Burslem Staffordshire (ST5): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be undertaken for personal reasons, after an injury, because of a birth defect or in order to aid breathing problems. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Burslem, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Burslem
In reconstructive rhinoplasty the intention is to address issues with breathing from external injury or natural causes. A patient who has difficulty in breathing during exercise, or suffers from sleep apnoea, may have an underlying issue such as a nasal obstruction. A doctor's examination is essential to ascertain the cause, as there can be various reasons for this
The midline wall of the nose (the septum) is crooked or pushed to one side in many cases of septal deviation. This is a major contributing factor. Septorhinoplasty can help to address any underlying issues and realign the septum. Cartilage grafts may be inserted in the nasal passage to strengthen the shape of the septum and nose, in key internal areas.
Reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty are typically carried out under general anaesthetic by a qualified surgeon, and most patients can usually head home on the same day as their surgery. If the procedure isn't too complex, your surgeon might recommend using a local anaesthetic instead, but this will be discussed with you during your consultation. During the surgery, an incision is made at the base of the nose to provide access to the internal structures. In many instances, the bones of the nose don't need to be broken; instead, they are reshaped and adjusted to improve breathing and align the septum. At this point, some cartilage may be removed or modified to enhance the nose's strength and achieve a more uniform appearance. To support the healing process, splints or casts might be used to maintain the nose's shape, reduce swelling, and assist in recovery.
The points where the incisions are made at the base of the nose are chosen very carefully to help reduce visible scarring. As a result, many patients find that they don't have any noticeable scars once their wounds heal. Generally, recovery times for reconstructive rhinoplasty are quite comparable for all patients, and they're typically advised to rest for about one to two weeks. This means that any heavy exertion or breathing should be avoided for at least the first week. Applying ice to the affected area can aid in recovery, along with adhering to a specific nasal cleaning plan.
You will have a follow-up appointment made to take off any splints or casts from your nose, and around that time, you should be able to return to your everyday life and work. It's important that you stay away from any contact sports or activities that could accidentally hit your nose, such as ball games and racquet sports, for a period of six to eight weeks after your procedure. After this period, your nose should have healed well enough for you to resume your usual lifestyle.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Burslem
Reshaping your nose for personal reasons is referred to as cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery (or a nose job), and it's considered an elective surgery. This means that health insurance companies may not cover the cost of the procedure or any follow-up consultations. However, it might be possible to have cosmetic rhinoplasty along with a reconstructive operation covered by insurance or through the NHS, based on a GP's recommendation.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Burslem:
- Removal of blemishes or scars.
- Removal of humps or protrusions.
- Reduction in width of the nasal bones.
- Widen or reduce nostril size.
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Reshape a twisted or curved nose.
These concerns, along with many others, can often be addressed by cosmetic rhinoplasty. However, it's crucial to discuss any decision with your GP initially, before seeking advice from a qualified plastic surgeon in Burslem. At that point, a tailored plan can be created for you, and realistic expectations can be set regarding the results. It should be noted, though, that not all individuals may be ideal candidates for cosmetic rhinoplasty. Factors like skin and bone structure, one's medical history, the possibility of adverse reactions, or even the chance of complications need to be carefully considered.
Your surgeon will carry out a physical examination to find out which areas might be altered. This assessment will help them evaluate the thickness of your skin, bone, and cartilage, and it may also offer some insight into how your breathing could be affected after the operation. During this time, you'll be asked about what you hope to achieve from the surgery and your reasons for wanting a rhinoplasty. Feeling a bit self-conscious is completely normal at this stage; it's not easy to talk about what we perceive as flaws. However, it's crucial for the surgeon to see that you've considered this carefully and understand the potential risks and outcomes involved in the procedure.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect After Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- Avoid jogging and other strenuous activities, contact sports in particular.
- Don't wear contacts or spectacles.
- Eat a high fibre diet until the recovery period has ended. This may seem a little strange, however the theory is a high fibre diet will prevent constipation and therefore avoid the need for straining and subsequent pressure in the surgery area.
- To be mindful when brushing teeth to avoid movement and bumping of the top lip.
- Try not to use extreme facial expressions or laugh.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.

A splint will be applied after surgery to keep nose in position and also help in healing. About a week at your post-operative check up the splint will usually be removed by the surgeon. If open rhinoplasty was used or the nasal bones have been broken and reset then there will be some swelling. For the first few days there may be some swelling on your eyes and the doctor may advise that you use a cold compress to reduce the swelling. Mostly swelling and bruising will be not seen after some weeks but some swelling may be seen for several months but it is not noticeable by others. For the nose to come out in its final shape it take 9 to 12 months.
In rhinoplasty surgery nose bleeding is common and you feel congested and this condition can last several weeks. You also feel you have a cold but avoid blowing your nose for around 4 weeks after surgery and this can make worse the healing process. You also feel tenderness on the nose if you are going outside then it is good for you to wear sun block.
