Rhinoplasty Rushden Northamptonshire (NN10): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be undertaken for personal reasons, in order to aid breathing difficulties, due to a birth defect or following an injury. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Rushden, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Rushden
In reconstructive rhinoplasty the objective is to treat issues with breathing from external injury or natural causes. A person who has difficulty in breathing during exercise, or suffers from sleep apnoea, might have an underlying problem such as a nasal obstruction. Examination will be necessary by a trained doctor to determine the precise cause, which may be down to any one of a number of factors.
Septal deviation, when the midline wall of the nose (the septum) is crooked or pushed to one side, is a major contributing factor in many cases. Septorhinoplasty surgery can help to address any underlying issues that may be present, as well as realigning the septum. Strengthening the shape of the nose and septum may involve inserting cartilage grafts in key internal areas of the nasal passage.
Usually, a qualified surgeon performs reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty using general anaesthetic, and patients often return home the same day as their surgery. If the procedure is relatively uncomplicated, your surgeon may recommend a local anaesthetic option, which will be covered in your consultation. During the operation, an incision is made at the base of the nose to give access to the internal areas. In many situations, there's no need to break the nasal bones; instead, they're reshaped to promote easier breathing and improve septal alignment. At this stage, the surgeon might either remove or adjust some cartilage for added strength and a more uniform appearance. To help manage swelling and support healing, splints or casts are commonly used.
Incisions made at the base of the nose are strategically chosen to minimise scarring, so most patients will not have visible marks after the wounds heal. Recovery times for reconstructive rhinoplasty tend to be consistent across patients, with advice to rest for one to two weeks. During this period, it's important to avoid exertion and heavy breathing, especially in the first week. Ice application and following a guided nasal cleaning routine can aid the recovery process.
A follow-up appointment will be set up for removing any splints or casts from your nose, and by then, you should be ready to return to work and your usual daily routine. It's best to steer clear of contact sports or any activities that could accidentally lead to your nose being struck, such as racquet sports or ball games, for about six to eight weeks post-operation. Once this period has passed, your nose should be well enough healed for you to go back to living your life as before.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Rushden
Cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery, often called a nose job, is the term used for reshaping a nose for personal reasons. It's important to note that this is considered elective surgery, so health insurance companies might not cover the costs of the procedure or any follow-up appointments and other treatments. That said, it's sometimes possible to combine cosmetic rhinoplasty with a reconstructive surgery that is being performed through an insurance scheme or via the National Health Service, as long as you have a referral from your GP.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Rushden:
- Removal of blemishes or scars.
- Reshape a curved or twisted nose.
- Removal of protrusions or humps.
- Reduction in width of the nasal bones.
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Widen or reduce nostril size.
Cosmetic rhinoplasty can treat all these reasons and more, but it's vital to first discuss any surgery choice with your GP before going for a consultation with a plastic surgeon in Rushden. Following this, a plan tailored to you can be developed, with a realistic perspective on what the surgery might achieve. Bear in mind that not everyone is a suitable candidate for cosmetic rhinoplasty; considerations such as skin and bone structure, medical background, possible adverse effects, and the risk of complications all play a role.
As part of the process, your surgeon will perform a physical examination to assess which areas can be altered. This examination will look at the thickness of your skin, bone, and cartilage, and it may also help to forecast any changes in your breathing that might happen post-surgery. You'll be asked about your expectations for the surgery and your motivations for wanting rhinoplasty. It's completely understandable to feel a bit self-conscious during this time; no one likes to talk about what they see as their flaws. Nonetheless, it's vital that the surgeon sees you have thought this through and have a good understanding of the risks and potential results involved in the surgery.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect After Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- Try not to laugh or use extreme facial expressions.
- Avoid running, jogging and other demanding activities, contact sports in particular.
- Eat a high fibre diet until the end of the recovery period. This may seem a little strange, however the theory is a high fibre diet will avoid constipation and thus avoid the need for straining and resulting pressure in the surgery area.
- To be mindful when brushing teeth to avoid movement and bumping of the top lip.
- Do not wear glasses or contact lenses.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.
