Rhinoplasty Waltham Abbey Essex (EN9): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be required so as to aid breathing difficulties, due to a birth defect, following an injury or undertaken for personal reasons. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Waltham Abbey, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Waltham Abbey
In reconstructive rhinoplasty the intention is to address problems with breathing from natural causes or external injury. A patient who has difficulty in breathing under exercise, or is suffering from sleep apnoea, may have an underlying problem like a nasal obstruction. A doctor's examination is essential to ascertain the cause, since this can be brought on by a number of factors.
In many cases, septal deviation is caused by a crooked or pushed-to-one-side midline wall of the nose (the septum). Realigning the septum and addressing any underlying issues are both possible with septorhinoplasty surgery. Strengthening the shape of the nose and septum may involve inserting cartilage grafts in key internal areas of the nasal passage.
Reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty are generally performed under general anaesthetic by a qualified surgeon, and most people can expect to go home the same day as their surgery. If the surgery is relatively simple, the surgeon might suggest a local anaesthetic, and this will be discussed during your initial consultation. During the procedure, an incision is typically made at the base of the nose to access the internal areas. In most cases, there's no need to break the nose bones; they are reshaped and adjusted instead to improve breathing and align the septum. At this time, cartilage may be removed or modified to strengthen the nose and achieve a more uniform appearance. To support healing, splints or casts may be applied to maintain the shape of the nose, reduce swelling, and aid in recovery.
When it comes to the placement of incisions at the base of the nose, the points are chosen very carefully to lessen the appearance of scarring. Many patients discover that they won't have any visible scars after their wounds heal. In terms of recovery, it's quite similar for everyone who has reconstructive rhinoplasty, and patients are typically told to rest for one to two weeks. This means that avoiding any heavy breathing or exertion is essential for at least a week. To help with the healing process, it's beneficial to apply ice to the affected area, combined with a recommended nasal cleaning routine.
After your surgery, a follow-up appointment will be arranged for the removal of any splints or casts from your nose, and at that point, you should feel ready to return to work and your daily activities. It's advisable to avoid any contact sports or sports where there's a risk of your nose being accidentally hit - like racquet sports or ball games - for six to eight weeks after the operation. By the end of this period, your nose should have healed enough for you to carry on with life as normal.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Waltham Abbey
Cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery (or a nose job) is when you reshape your nose for personal reasons, and it's considered elective surgery. This means that health insurance companies might not cover the cost of the procedure or any follow-up appointments. However, you might be able to combine cosmetic rhinoplasty with a reconstructive surgery covered by insurance or the NHS, following a recommendation from your GP.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Waltham Abbey:
- Removal of humps or protrusions.
- Reduction in width of the nasal bones.
- Reshape a curved or twisted nose.
- Widen or reduce nostril size.
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Removal of scars or blemishes.
While cosmetic rhinoplasty can treat all these reasons and more, it's essential to discuss any surgery decisions with your GP initially, before seeing an expert plastic surgeon in Waltham Abbey. A customised plan should then be developed for you, considering your individual needs and setting realistic expectations for the surgery's results. It's important to note that not everyone may be suitable for cosmetic rhinoplasty. Factors such as skin and bone structure, medical history, potential adverse reactions, or the risk of worsening the condition must be considered.
Your surgeon will begin by conducting a physical examination to see which areas could potentially be changed. This assessment helps determine the thickness of your skin, cartilage, and bone, and may also give insights into any changes that could affect your breathing post-surgery. You will be asked about your expectations and motivations for wanting rhinoplasty. It's perfectly natural to feel a bit self-conscious during this discussion; most people find it hard to talk about what they view as imperfections. However, it is essential for your surgeon to know that you've considered the process carefully and understand the risks and potential outcomes that come with the surgery.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect After Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- To be cautious when brushing teeth to avoid bumping and movement of the upper lip.
- Avoid running, jogging and other demanding activities, contact sports in particular.
- Don't wear contact lenses or glasses.
- Eat a high fibre diet until the recovery period has ended. This might seem a bit strange, however the theory is a high fibre diet will avoid constipation and consequently avoid the need for straining and resulting pressure in the surgery area.
- Try not to use extreme facial expressions or laugh.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.
