Rhinoplasty Altrincham Greater Manchester (WA14): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be required due to a birth defect, so as to aid breathing problems, after an injury or undertaken for personal reasons. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Altrincham, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Altrincham
In reconstructive rhinoplasty the aim is to treat problems with breathing from natural causes or external injury. A patient who has difficulty in breathing under exercise, or suffers from sleep apnoea, could have an underlying problem such as a nasal obstruction. This can be caused by a number of reasons and a doctor's examination is required to discover the cause.
In many cases, septal deviation is caused by a crooked or pushed-to-one-side midline wall of the nose (the septum). Septorhinoplasty, a type of surgery, can help to realign the septum and address any other underlying issues. Strengthening the shape of the nose and septum may involve inserting cartilage grafts in key internal areas of the nasal passage.
Reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty are typically performed under general anaesthetic by a skilled surgeon, and most patients can expect to go home the same day. If the procedure is not overly complex, the surgeon may suggest using a local anaesthetic, which will be covered during your consultation. The surgery involves making an incision at the nose base to access the internal areas. Often, the nasal bones aren't broken but rather reshaped and adjusted to facilitate better breathing and septum alignment. During this stage, cartilage might be removed or adjusted to strengthen the nose and achieve a more uniform shape. Splints or casts are usually applied to help maintain the nose's shape, reduce swelling, and support recovery.
Careful consideration is given to where incisions are made at the base of the nose to keep scarring to a minimum, so many patients do not end up with visible scars once healed. Recovery times are usually similar for patients undergoing reconstructive rhinoplasty, with a recommended rest period of one to two weeks. Avoiding strenuous activity and heavy breathing, especially in the first week, is essential. Ice application and a directed programme of nasal cleaning are also recommended to support the recovery process.
An appointment for a follow-up will be arranged to remove any casts or splints from your nose, and you should be in a good position to get back to work and your regular daily activities by then. It's advisable to avoid contact sports or any activities that could risk a bump to your nose, like ball or racquet sports, for about six to eight weeks after your surgery. Once that time has passed, your nose should have healed nicely, allowing you to continue with life as you normally would.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Altrincham
Known as a nose job, cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery is performed for personal reasons and is considered an elective procedure. Because of this, costs related to the surgery and any follow-up visits may not be included in health insurance coverage. Nevertheless, it could be feasible to have cosmetic rhinoplasty carried out alongside a reconstructive operation that falls under an insurance plan or is accessed through the National Health Service with a referral from your GP.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Altrincham:
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Reducing the width of the nasal bones.
- Removal of blemishes or scars.
- Removal of humps or protrusions.
- Reshape a curved or twisted nose.
- Reduce or widen nostril size.
Many reasons can lead individuals to seek cosmetic rhinoplasty, but it's crucial to talk to your GP first before moving forward to an expert plastic surgeon in Altrincham. After that, a customised plan will be designed for you, along with realistic expectations about what any surgery might achieve. Remember, not everyone is ideal for cosmetic rhinoplasty; it depends on factors like your skin type, bone structure, medical history, and the risk of negative side effects or even making things worse.
Your surgeon will give you a physical exam to see what can be improved. This will involve checking your skin, bone, and cartilage, and considering any potential breathing changes after surgery. You'll also discuss your expectations and motivations for rhinoplasty. It's understandable to feel a bit nervous, but it's important to be open and honest with your surgeon. They need to know that you've thought carefully about the procedure and are aware of the potential risks and rewards.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect Following Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- Don't wear spectacles or contact lenses.
- To be cautious when brushing teeth to avoid movement and bumping of the upper lip.
- Try not to laugh or use extreme facial expressions.
- Eat a high fibre diet until the recovery period has ended. This might seem a bit peculiar, but the theory is a high fibre diet will prevent constipation and hence avoid any straining and subsequent pressure in the surgery area.
- Avoid running, jogging and other demanding activities, in particular contact sports.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.
