Rhinoplasty Heybridge Essex (CM9): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be undertaken for personal reasons, because of a birth defect, after an injury or in order to aid breathing difficulties. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Heybridge, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Heybridge
In reconstructive rhinoplasty the intention is to rectify issues with breathing from external injury or natural causes. A patient in Heybridge who's suffering from sleep apnoea or who has trouble breathing under exercise could have a nasal obstruction as the underlying problem. Examination will be needed by a doctor to ascertain the precise cause, which may be attributable to any one of a number of factors.
A crooked or pushed-to-one-side midline wall of the nose (the septum) is a major contributing factor in many cases of septal deviation. Septorhinoplasty, a type of surgery, can help to realign the septum and address any other underlying issues. The shape of the nose and septum may be strengthened by inserting cartilage grafts in key internal areas of the nasal passage.
Reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty are typically carried out under general anaesthetic by a qualified surgeon, and most patients can usually head home on the same day as their surgery. If the procedure isn't too complex, your surgeon might recommend using a local anaesthetic instead, but this will be discussed with you during your consultation. During the surgery, an incision is made at the base of the nose to provide access to the internal structures. In many instances, the bones of the nose don't need to be broken; instead, they are reshaped and adjusted to improve breathing and align the septum. At this point, some cartilage may be removed or modified to enhance the nose's strength and achieve a more uniform appearance. To support the healing process, splints or casts might be used to maintain the nose's shape, reduce swelling, and assist in recovery.
The careful placement of incisions at the base of the nose is intended to lessen the appearance of scarring, and most patients will find that there are no visible scars once they've healed. For patients undergoing reconstructive rhinoplasty, the recovery period is generally similar, with advice to rest for one to two weeks. This means avoiding any strenuous activity or heavy breathing for at least the first week. Applying ice to the affected area can be beneficial for recovery, along with a directed nasal cleaning programme.
A follow-up appointment will be set up for you, where any splints or casts from your nose will be removed, and by that time, you should be able to go back to work and normal life again. It's recommended that you avoid certain sports that might pose a risk of contact to your nose - like ball sports or racquet sports - for six to eight weeks following your surgery. After that, your nose ought to be healed sufficiently, so you can get back to how things were.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Heybridge
Reshaping your nose for personal reasons is called cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery (also known as a nose job), and it's considered elective surgery. This means that health insurance companies might not cover the cost of the procedure or any follow-up consultations. However, you might be able to have cosmetic rhinoplasty at the same time as a reconstructive operation covered by insurance or through the NHS if your GP recommends it.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Heybridge:
- Removal of protrusions or humps.
- Widen or reduce the size of the nostril.
- Removal of blemishes or scars.
- Reducing the width of the nasal bones.
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Reshape a twisted or curved nose.
If you're considering cosmetic rhinoplasty, all of these reasons and more can be addressed, but it's wise to have a conversation with your GP first before making any surgical decisions. Once you've done that, you can book a consultation with a skilled plastic surgeon in Heybridge. A tailored plan will be established just for you, alongside discussions about what you can realistically expect from the surgery. It's also crucial to consider that not everyone is a good candidate for cosmetic rhinoplasty. Personal factors such as skin and bone structure, medical history, and the risk of complications must be evaluated, as there's a chance the situation might worsen.
Before anything else, your surgeon is going to perform a physical examination to identify the areas that can be modified. This will provide insights into the thickness of your skin, cartilage, and bone, and could even help predict any changes in your breathing that might arise afterwards. They'll likely ask you about your expectations for the surgery and your reasons for wanting a rhinoplasty. It's natural to feel a bit self-conscious at this point because discussing things we see as imperfections can be uncomfortable. Still, it's really important for the surgeon to know that you've thought it all through and fully grasp the potential risks and consequences of the surgery.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect Following Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- To be mindful when brushing teeth to avoid movement and bumping of the upper lip.
- Avoid jogging and other demanding activities, contact sports in particular.
- Try not to laugh or use extreme facial expressions.
- Eat a high fibre diet until the recovery period has ended. This might seem a little peculiar, but the theory is a high fibre diet will prevent constipation and hence avoid the need for straining and resulting pressure in the surgery area.
- Do not wear spectacles or contact lenses.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.
