Rhinoplasty Glossop Derbyshire (SK13): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be undertaken for personal reasons, in order to aid breathing difficulties, due to a birth defect or after an injury. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Glossop, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Glossop
Reconstructive rhinoplasty has the main objective of curing breathing problems that stem from natural causes or external injuries. A patient who has difficulty in breathing under exercise, or suffers from sleep apnoea, might have an underlying issue such as a nasal obstruction. A doctor's examination is necessary to discover the cause, since there can be various reasons for this
The midline wall of the nose (the septum) is crooked or pushed to one side in many cases of septal deviation. This is a major contributing factor. Surgery known as septorhinoplasty can help to realign the septum and address any other underlying issues. To strengthen the shape of the septum and nose, cartilage grafts may be inserted in key internal areas of the nasal passage.
Reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty are commonly carried out under general anaesthetic by a qualified surgeon, with most people able to return home the same day. If the surgery is straightforward, the surgeon may suggest a local anaesthetic, which will be discussed during the consultation phase. The procedure involves making an incision at the base of the nose to access the internal areas. In many cases, the bones of the nose are reshaped and adjusted rather than broken, allowing for improved breathing and septum alignment. During this stage, cartilage might be removed or adjusted to strengthen the nose and create a more uniform shape. Splints or casts may be used to help maintain the nose's shape, reduce swelling, and aid in recovery.
The areas where incisions are made at the base of the nose are carefully chosen to reduce visible scarring, and many patients do not see noticeable marks once healing is finished. Recovery times for reconstructive rhinoplasty are broadly similar, with patients advised to take one to two weeks of rest. This involves refraining from strenuous activities and heavy breathing for at least a week. Applying ice to the area and adhering to a directed nasal cleaning routine are helpful for recovery.
An appointment will be set up to remove the splints or cast from your nose, and at that point, you should be able to get back to work and normal daily activities. It's advised to avoid any contact sports or sports where there's a chance of an accidental blow to the nose (like racquet sports or ball games) for about six to eight weeks post-surgery. By then, your nose should have healed enough to continue your normal routine.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Glossop
If you're thinking about reshaping your nose for personal reasons, what you're looking at is known as cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery, sometimes called a nose job. This kind of surgery falls under the elective category, so it's worth keeping in mind that your health insurance may not cover the costs of the procedure or any follow-up care. However, if you're having a reconstructive surgery that your insurance covers or that's done through the National Health Service, you might be able to have the cosmetic procedure done at the same time, provided your GP recommends it.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Glossop:
- Removal of protrusions or humps.
- Reduction in width of the nasal bones.
- Removal of blemishes or scars.
- Widen or reduce the size of the nostril.
- Reshape a twisted or curved nose.
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
These reasons and more can be treated with cosmetic rhinoplasty, but you should discuss any surgery decision with your GP initially, before consulting an expert plastic surgeon in Glossop. A customised plan should be developed for you, considering your specific needs and setting realistic expectations for the outcome. It's essential to consider that not everyone is suitable for cosmetic rhinoplasty. Factors such as skin and bone structure, medical history, potential adverse reactions, or the risk of making the issue worse must be taken into account.
Your surgeon will begin by conducting a physical examination to see which areas could potentially be changed. This assessment helps determine the thickness of your skin, cartilage, and bone, and may also give insights into any changes that could affect your breathing post-surgery. You will be asked about your expectations and motivations for wanting rhinoplasty. It's perfectly natural to feel a bit self-conscious during this discussion; most people find it hard to talk about what they view as imperfections. However, it is essential for your surgeon to know that you've considered the process carefully and understand the risks and potential outcomes that come with the surgery.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect Following Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- Don't wear glasses or contact lenses.
- Avoid jogging, running and other demanding activities, particularly contact sports.
- Try not to laugh or use extreme facial expressions.
- Eat a high fibre diet until the end of the recovery period. This might seem a bit peculiar, but the theory is a high fibre diet will prevent constipation and hence avoid the need for straining and subsequent pressure to the surgery area.
- To be cautious when brushing teeth to avoid movement and bumping of the upper lip.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.
