Rhinoplasty Marlborough Wiltshire (SN8): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be undertaken for personal reasons, because of a birth defect, in order to aid breathing problems or after an injury. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Marlborough, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Marlborough
In reconstructive rhinoplasty the aim is to treat problems with breathing from external injuries or natural causes. A patient who's got a nasal obstruction as an underlying issue might suffer from sleep apnoea or have trouble breathing during exercise. This can be caused by a number of reasons and a doctor's examination is necessary to discover the precise cause.
A major contributing factor in many cases is septal deviation, when the midline wall of the nose (the septum) is crooked or pushed to one side. Septorhinoplasty, a type of surgery, can help to realign the septum and address any other underlying issues. To strengthen the shape of the septum and nose, cartilage grafts may be inserted in key internal areas of the nasal passage.
Reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty are generally done under general anaesthetic by a qualified surgeon, with most patients returning home on the same day. If your surgery is straightforward, the surgeon might recommend a local anaesthetic, which will be discussed during your consultation. The surgery involves making an incision at the base of the nose to access internal structures. In many cases, the nose bones don't need to be broken; instead, they are reshaped and adjusted to improve breathing and septum alignment. At this point, cartilage may be removed or adjusted to strengthen the nose and provide a more uniform shape. Splints or casts are often applied to help keep the nose in shape, reduce swelling, and assist in recovery.
The surgeon makes small incisions at the base of the nose to minimise scarring. Most people won't see any visible scars after healing. Recovery takes about a week or two. During this time, you'll need to rest and avoid strenuous activity. Applying ice to the area and following a nasal cleaning routine can help speed up healing.
An appointment will be set up to remove the splints or cast from your nose, and at that point, you should be able to get back to work and normal daily activities. It's advised to avoid any contact sports or sports where there's a chance of an accidental blow to the nose (like racquet sports or ball games) for about six to eight weeks post-surgery. By then, your nose should have healed enough to continue your normal routine.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Marlborough
Cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery, often called a nose job, is the term used for reshaping a nose for personal reasons. It's important to note that this is considered elective surgery, so health insurance companies might not cover the costs of the procedure or any follow-up appointments and other treatments. That said, it's sometimes possible to combine cosmetic rhinoplasty with a reconstructive surgery that is being performed through an insurance scheme or via the National Health Service, as long as you have a referral from your GP.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Marlborough:
- Reduction in width of the nasal bones.
- Removal of humps or protrusions.
- Removal of scars or blemishes.
- Widen or reduce the size of the nostril.
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Reshape a twisted or curved nose.
All of these reasons and more can be treated with cosmetic rhinoplasty but any surgery decision should be discussed with your GP in the first instance, before a consult by an expert plastic surgeon in Marlborough. A tailored plan should then be constructed for you as an individual alongside a realistic expectation about the outcome of any surgery. It must be considered that not all people may be suitable candidates for cosmetic rhinoplasty. This may be due to an individual's medical history, skin and bone structure, the danger of making the matter worse, or the potential for adverse reactions.
Your surgeon will perform a physical examination to evaluate which areas can be altered. This examination helps to determine the thickness of your skin, bone, and cartilage and might also be useful in predicting any changes to your breathing after the surgery. During this process, you'll be asked about what you expect from the procedure and your reasons for wanting rhinoplasty. Feeling a bit self-conscious at this stage is completely normal; after all, most people don't enjoy discussing what they perceive as flaws in themselves. However, it is crucial for the surgeon to see that you've given this matter some serious thought and understand the potential risks and outcomes involved with the surgery.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect Following Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- Eat a high fibre diet until the recovery period has ended. This may seem a bit peculiar, however the theory is a high fibre diet will avoid constipation and thus avoid the need for straining and resulting pressure in the surgery area.
- To be mindful when brushing teeth to avoid movement and bumping of the top lip.
- Avoid jogging and other strenuous activities, contact sports in particular.
- Try not to laugh or use extreme facial expressions.
- Don't wear spectacles or contacts.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.
