Rhinoplasty Salford Greater Manchester (M5): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be undertaken for personal reasons, in order to aid breathing problems, after an injury or due to a birth defect. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Salford, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Salford
In reconstructive rhinoplasty the aim is to treat issues with breathing from natural causes or external injuries. A patient who has difficulty in breathing during exercise, or suffers from sleep apnoea, might have an underlying issue such as a nasal obstruction. This can be caused by any number of reasons and examination by a doctor is needed to determine the cause.
Septal deviation is often caused by a crooked or pushed-to-one-side midline wall of the nose (the septum). This is a major factor in many cases. Septorhinoplasty can help to address any underlying issues and realign the septum. Strengthening the shape of the septum and nose may involve inserting cartilage grafts in key internal areas of the nasal passage.
Reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty are generally done under general anaesthetic by a qualified surgeon, with most patients returning home on the same day. If your surgery is straightforward, the surgeon might recommend a local anaesthetic, which will be discussed during your consultation. The surgery involves making an incision at the base of the nose to access internal structures. In many cases, the nose bones don't need to be broken; instead, they are reshaped and adjusted to improve breathing and septum alignment. At this point, cartilage may be removed or adjusted to strengthen the nose and provide a more uniform shape. Splints or casts are often applied to help keep the nose in shape, reduce swelling, and assist in recovery.
The incision points at the base of the nose are chosen carefully to minimise visible scarring, so many patients won't see noticeable scars once the wounds have healed. Recovery periods are pretty similar for all reconstructive rhinoplasty patients, who are advised to rest for one or two weeks. This means avoiding exertion or heavy breathing for at least a week. Applying ice to the area helps with recovery, along with following a directed nasal cleaning programme.
A follow-up appointment will be arranged to take off any splints or cast from your nose, and at this stage, you should be able to return to work and your regular daily activities. It's advised to avoid contact sports or any sports where there's an accidental risk of your nose being struck (like racquet sports, ball sports, etc.) for six to eight weeks post-operation. By then, your nose should have healed sufficiently for you to get back to your normal life.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Salford
If someone is looking to reshape their nose for personal reasons, they might opt for what's called cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery, often simply known as a nose job. This is viewed as an elective surgery, which could mean that health insurance doesn't cover the expenses for the procedure or for any follow-up consultations that may be required. However, there might be a chance to combine cosmetic rhinoplasty with a reconstructive procedure that is covered under insurance or is accessible via the National Health Service, with a recommendation from your GP.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Salford:
- Reshape a twisted or curved nose.
- Removal of scars or blemishes.
- Removal of humps or protrusions.
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Reduce or widen the size of the nostril.
- Reducing the width of the nasal bones.
Cosmetic rhinoplasty can address these reasons and more, but any decision about surgery should first be discussed with your GP, before consulting an expert plastic surgeon in Salford. A tailored plan should then be created for you as an individual, with realistic expectations about the surgery's outcome. It's important to remember that not everyone is a suitable candidate for cosmetic rhinoplasty. This could be due to factors such as skin and bone structure, medical history, potential adverse reactions, or the risk of worsening the issue.
Your surgeon will carry out a physical examination to assess which areas can be changed. This involves checking the thickness of your skin, bone, and cartilage and may also help predict any changes in your breathing post-surgery. You'll be asked about your expectations and reasons for wanting the rhinoplasty. It's normal to feel self-conscious at this stage; nobody likes talking about their perceived imperfections. However, it's crucial for the surgeon to see that you've thought through the process and fully understand the potential risks and outcomes.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect After Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- Eat a high fibre diet until the recovery period has ended. This might seem a bit strange, however the theory is a high fibre diet will prevent constipation and consequently avoid the need for straining and subsequent pressure in the surgery area.
- Try not to laugh or use extreme facial expressions.
- To be cautious when brushing teeth to avoid bumping and movement of the top lip.
- Avoid running, jogging and other demanding activities, especially contact sports.
- Do not wear spectacles or contacts.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.

A splint will be applied after surgery to keep nose in position and also help in healing. About a week at your post-operative check up the splint will usually be removed by the surgeon. If open rhinoplasty was used or the nasal bones have been broken and reset then there will be some swelling. For the first few days there may be some swelling on your eyes and the doctor may advise that you use a cold compress to reduce the swelling. Mostly swelling and bruising will be not seen after some weeks but some swelling may be seen for several months but it is not noticeable by others. For the nose to come out in its final shape it take 9 to 12 months.
