Rhinoplasty Gainsborough Lincolnshire (DN21): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be undertaken for personal reasons, because of a birth defect, following an injury or in order to aid breathing problems. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Gainsborough, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Gainsborough
Reconstructive rhinoplasty has the main intention of rectifying breathing problems which stem from natural causes or external injury. A person who has a nasal obstruction as an underlying issue may suffer from sleep apnoea or have difficulty in breathing during exercise. This can be due to various reasons and examination by a doctor is needed to discover the exact cause.
Septal deviation is often caused by a crooked or pushed-to-one-side midline wall of the nose (the septum). This is a major factor in many cases. Septorhinoplasty can help to address any underlying issues and realign the septum. This might include inserting cartilage grafts in key internal areas of the nasal passage to strengthen the shape of the septum and nose.
Typically, reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty are carried out under general anaesthetic by a qualified surgeon. Most patients can look forward to going home on the same day as the surgery. If the procedure isn't particularly complex, your surgeon might propose using a local anaesthetic instead. This option will be thoroughly discussed during your initial consultation. The operation generally involves making a cut at the base of the nose to gain access to the internal structures. In many instances, the nasal bones don't need to be broken; instead, they're reshaped to facilitate better breathing and align the septum. During this phase, some cartilage might be removed or modified to enhance the strength and shape of the nose. To help maintain the form, minimise swelling, and support recovery, splints or casts may be put in place.
The spots chosen for the incisions at the base of the nose are done so with great consideration, as this helps to reduce the risk of noticeable scarring. Many patients report that they don't see any visible scars once the healing process is complete. For those undergoing reconstructive rhinoplasty, the recovery times are generally alike, with most people advised to rest for one to two weeks. It's important to avoid heavy breathing or any strenuous activity for at least a week. Applying ice to the affected area is also recommended to support recovery, along with a structured nasal cleaning programme.
A follow-up visit will be scheduled so that any splints or casts that are on your nose can be removed, and at this stage, you ought to be able to return to work and carry on with your everyday life. It's wise to avoid participating in contact sports or those where there's a risk of your nose being accidentally hit, like racquet and ball sports, for six to eight weeks following your surgery. Once this period has passed, your nose should be healed well enough for you to live as you did before.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Gainsborough
If you're reshaping your nose for personal reasons, it's known as cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery (also called a nose job), and it's considered elective surgery. This means that health insurance companies might not cover the cost of the procedure or follow-up consultations. However, it may be possible to have cosmetic rhinoplasty at the same time as a reconstructive operation covered by insurance or through the NHS with a GP's recommendation.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Gainsborough:
- Reduce or widen the size of the nostril.
- Removal of humps or protrusions.
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Removal of blemishes or scars.
- Reshape a twisted or curved nose.
- Reducing the width of the nasal bones.
All sorts of reasons can be managed through cosmetic rhinoplasty, but the first step should always be a discussion with your GP regarding any surgical decisions prior to seeing an expert plastic surgeon in Gainsborough. Following that, a tailored plan should be created just for you, with a realistic outlook on what the surgery can achieve. It's also important to consider that not everyone might be a suitable candidate for cosmetic rhinoplasty. This could depend on an individual's skin and bone structure, their medical history, the likelihood of adverse reactions, or even the risk of aggravating the issue.
Your surgeon will conduct a physical examination to see which areas can be altered, focusing on the thickness of your skin, bone, and cartilage. This can also help predict any breathing changes that might occur after surgery. You'll need to talk about your expectations and why you want the rhinoplasty. It's normal to feel self-conscious at this point; after all, no one likes talking about their perceived flaws. But it's vital for the surgeon to know that you've considered the process carefully and understand the risks and potential outcomes.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect Following Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- To be careful when brushing your teeth to avoid movement and bumping of the upper lip.
- Don't wear glasses or contact lenses.
- Eat a high fibre diet until the recovery period has ended. This might seem a bit peculiar, but the theory is a high fibre diet will avoid constipation and therefore avoid the need for straining and subsequent pressure in the surgery area.
- Try not to use extreme facial expressions or laugh.
- Avoid jogging, running and other demanding activities, contact sports in particular.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.

Rhinoplasty Recovery
A rhinoplasty patient's post-operative recovery experience differs from person to person but common pattern of recovery is for all. Mostly patient come back in normal position within in a week after surgery but its some side effects can last for several weeks or even months and it should not cause discomfort to you. If you feel any discomfort after rhinoplasty surgery you can call the cosmetic surgeon directly through the contact numbers for emergencies provided by them.
After rhinoplasty surgery there is some discomfort you have to face. To overcome the pain your surgeon will provide you with medication to control the pain and the time taken is 5 to 10 days.
A splint will be applied after surgery to keep nose in position and also help in healing. About a week at your post-operative check up the splint will usually be removed by the surgeon. If open rhinoplasty was used or the nasal bones have been broken and reset then there will be some swelling. For the first few days there may be some swelling on your eyes and the doctor may advise that you use a cold compress to reduce the swelling. Mostly swelling and bruising will be not seen after some weeks but some swelling may be seen for several months but it is not noticeable by others. For the nose to come out in its final shape it take 9 to 12 months.
In rhinoplasty surgery nose bleeding is common and you feel congested and this condition can last several weeks. You also feel you have a cold but avoid blowing your nose for around 4 weeks after surgery and this can make worse the healing process. You also feel tenderness on the nose if you are going outside then it is good for you to wear sun block.
Between 1 to 3 weeks after the rhinoplasty surgery one will be fit for their work. You should have to not do any hard work for six weeks. The hard work may effect on the proper healing of your nose and may lead to revision rhinoplasty.
