Rhinoplasty Knaresborough North Yorkshire (HG5): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be required because of a birth defect, in order to aid breathing problems, following an injury or undertaken for personal reasons. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Knaresborough, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Knaresborough
The aim with reconstructive surgery is to rectify breathing problems that have arisen as a result of natural causes or external injury. A person who has a nasal obstruction as an underlying problem may suffer from sleep apnoea or have trouble breathing under exercise. A doctor's examination is required to determine the cause, since this can be caused by a number of factors.
In many cases, a crooked or pushed-to-one-side midline wall of the nose (the septum) is a major contributing factor to septal deviation. Septorhinoplasty, a type of surgery, can help to realign the septum and address any other underlying issues. Key internal areas of the nasal passage may be the site of cartilage graft insertion to strengthen the shape of the nose and septum.
Typically, reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty are carried out under general anaesthetic by a qualified surgeon. Most patients can look forward to going home on the same day as the surgery. If the procedure isn't particularly complex, your surgeon might propose using a local anaesthetic instead. This option will be thoroughly discussed during your initial consultation. The operation generally involves making a cut at the base of the nose to gain access to the internal structures. In many instances, the nasal bones don't need to be broken; instead, they're reshaped to facilitate better breathing and align the septum. During this phase, some cartilage might be removed or modified to enhance the strength and shape of the nose. To help maintain the form, minimise swelling, and support recovery, splints or casts may be put in place.
The incision points at the base of the nose are meticulously chosen to minimise noticeable scarring, so many patients won't see visible scars once the wounds have healed. Recovery periods are generally the same for all reconstructive rhinoplasty patients, who will be advised to rest for one or two weeks. This involves avoiding exertion or heavy breathing for at least a week. Ice should be applied to the affected area to aid recovery, along with a directed programme of nasal cleaning.
You'll need a follow-up appointment to take off any splints or casts from your nose, and by this time, you should be ready to go back to work and your normal daily activities. Just keep in mind that it's best to steer clear of contact sports or any activities where your nose might accidentally get hit, such as racquet games or ball sports, for about six to eight weeks post-surgery. After that, your nose should be healed enough for you to resume your usual routine.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Knaresborough
Reshaping a nose for personal reasons is known as cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery (also nose job) and is considered an elective surgery. This means that health insurance companies may not cover the cost of the procedure or any subsequent follow-up consultations and procedures. It may be possible to have cosmetic rhinoplasty at the same time as a reconstructive operation which is being performed under an insurance scheme or through the National Health Service via a recommendation from your GP.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Knaresborough:
- Reduce or widen the size of the nostril.
- Reducing the width of the nasal bones.
- Removal of scars or blemishes.
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Removal of protrusions or humps.
- Reshape a curved or twisted nose.
While cosmetic rhinoplasty can treat all these reasons and more, it's essential to discuss any surgery decisions with your GP initially, before seeing an expert plastic surgeon in Knaresborough. A customised plan should then be developed for you, considering your individual needs and setting realistic expectations for the surgery's results. It's important to note that not everyone may be suitable for cosmetic rhinoplasty. Factors such as skin and bone structure, medical history, potential adverse reactions, or the risk of worsening the condition must be considered.
Your surgeon will give you a physical exam to see what can be improved. This will involve checking your skin, bone, and cartilage, and considering any potential breathing changes after surgery. You'll also discuss your expectations and motivations for rhinoplasty. It's understandable to feel a bit nervous, but it's important to be open and honest with your surgeon. They need to know that you've thought carefully about the procedure and are aware of the potential risks and rewards.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect Following Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- Eat a high fibre diet until the end of the recovery period. This might seem a little peculiar, but the theory is a high fibre diet will avoid constipation and thus avoid the need for straining and subsequent pressure in the surgery area.
- Don't wear contacts or glasses.
- To be cautious when brushing your teeth to avoid movement and bumping of the top lip.
- Try not to laugh or use extreme facial expressions.
- Avoid jogging and other strenuous activities, particularly contact sports.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.

A rhinoplasty patient's post-operative recovery experience differs from person to person but common pattern of recovery is for all. If you feel any discomfort after rhinoplasty surgery you can call the cosmetic surgeon directly through the contact numbers for emergencies provided by them.
After rhinoplasty surgery there is some discomfort you have to face. To overcome the pain your surgeon will provide you with medication to control the pain and the time taken is 5 to 10 days.
A splint will be applied after surgery to keep nose in position and also help in healing. About a week at your post-operative check up the splint will usually be removed by the surgeon. If open rhinoplasty was used or the nasal bones have been broken and reset then there will be some swelling. For the first few days there may be some swelling on your eyes and the doctor may advise that you use a cold compress to reduce the swelling. Mostly swelling and bruising will be not seen after some weeks but some swelling may be seen for several months but it is not noticeable by others. For the nose to come out in its final shape it take 9 to 12 months.
In rhinoplasty surgery nose bleeding is common and you feel congested and this condition can last several weeks. You also feel you have a cold but avoid blowing your nose for around 4 weeks after surgery and this can make worse the healing process. You also feel tenderness on the nose if you are going outside then it is good for you to wear sun block.
Between 1 to 3 weeks after the rhinoplasty surgery one will be fit for their work. You should have to not do any hard work for six weeks. The hard work may effect on the proper healing of your nose and may lead to revision rhinoplasty.
