Rhinoplasty Penarth Wales (CF64): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be undertaken for personal reasons, after an injury, due to a birth defect or so as to aid breathing problems. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Penarth, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Penarth
Reconstructive rhinoplasty has the main goal of treating breathing problems which stem from external injury or natural causes. A patient in Penarth who suffers from sleep apnoea or who has trouble breathing under exercise may have a nasal obstruction as the underlying issue. This can be down to any number of reasons and examination by a doctor is required to discover the exact cause.
A major contributing factor in many cases is septal deviation, when the midline wall of the nose (the septum) is crooked or pushed to one side. Realigning the septum and addressing any underlying issues are both possible with septorhinoplasty surgery. Inserting cartilage grafts in key internal areas of the nasal passage is one way to strengthen the shape of the septum and nose.
Typically, reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty are carried out by a qualified surgeon under general anaesthetic, and most patients can expect to go home the same day as their operation. If your procedure isn't particularly complex, the surgeon might recommend using a local anaesthetic instead, but this will be talked about during your consultation. The surgery itself involves making an incision at the base of the nose to access the internal structures. In many instances, the bones don't need to be broken but are instead reshaped and adjusted for better breathing and proper septum alignment. At this point, some cartilage may be removed or modified to enhance the nose's strength and achieve a more even shape. To help maintain the nose's configuration, minimise swelling, and support recovery, splints or casts might be used.
The points where the incisions at the base of the nose are placed are carefully chosen to reduce noticeable scarring and many patients will not see any visible scars once the wounds have healed. Recovery periods are broadly similar for all patients of reconstructive rhinoplasty and they will be advised to rest for one or two weeks. This means avoiding any exertion or heavy breathing for at least one week. Ice should also be applied to the affected area to aid recovery along with a directed program of nasal cleaning.
You'll need a follow-up appointment to take off any splints or casts from your nose, and by this time, you should be ready to go back to work and your normal daily activities. Just keep in mind that it's best to steer clear of contact sports or any activities where your nose might accidentally get hit, such as racquet games or ball sports, for about six to eight weeks post-surgery. After that, your nose should be healed enough for you to resume your usual routine.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Penarth
The procedure of reshaping a nose for personal reasons is referred to as cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery, or a nose job for short. Classified as elective surgery, it means that health insurance companies may not pay for the procedure or any follow-up consultations and treatments. That said, it could be possible to have cosmetic rhinoplasty performed alongside a reconstructive operation that is covered under an insurance scheme or through the National Health Service if your GP provides a recommendation.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Penarth:
- Reshape a curved or twisted nose.
- Reducing the width of the nasal bones.
- Widen or reduce the size of the nostril.
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Removal of blemishes or scars.
- Removal of humps or protrusions.
Many reasons can lead individuals to seek cosmetic rhinoplasty, but it's crucial to talk to your GP first before moving forward to an expert plastic surgeon in Penarth. After that, a customised plan will be designed for you, along with realistic expectations about what any surgery might achieve. Remember, not everyone is ideal for cosmetic rhinoplasty; it depends on factors like your skin type, bone structure, medical history, and the risk of negative side effects or even making things worse.
Your surgeon will check you over to see what can be changed. They'll look at your skin, bone, and cartilage to figure out what's possible. They'll also think about how the surgery might affect your breathing. You'll need to talk about what you want from the surgery and why. It's totally normal to feel a bit awkward, but it's important to be honest and open with your surgeon. They need to know that you've thought about everything, including the risks and potential outcomes.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect Following Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- Avoid jogging and other strenuous activities, contact sports in particular.
- Don't wear spectacles or contacts.
- To be mindful when brushing your teeth to avoid movement and bumping of the upper lip.
- Try not to laugh or use extreme facial expressions.
- Eat a high fibre diet until the recovery period has ended. This may seem a little strange, however the theory is a high fibre diet will prevent constipation and thus avoid the need for straining and subsequent pressure in the surgery area.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.

Penarth Rhinoplasty Questions
Only recently I was considering the typical questions that folks in Penarth ask in regard to rhinoplasty. Many of our visitors have submitted some obvious enquiries that I thought would be worthy of mentioning. Those which I picked out were, Can rhinoplasty reduce nostril size? How do you breathe during rhinoplasty surgery? How much does it cost to do rhinoplasty? How does rhinoplasty feel? What are rhinoplasty and septoplasty? What is rhinoplasty for? When does rhinoplasty stop hurting? Most of these questions have hopefully been answered on this webpage, and if some still need to be addressed we'll shortly be introducing a rhinoplasty "Q&A" feature. Our gratitude goes out to the following people in Penarth for finding the time to pose these questions; Leon Thomson, Woody Dixon, Ernie Sullivan and Michelle Hartley. We were also pleased to get appropriate contributions from Brooklyn Reilly in East Aberthaw, Patrick Eaton in Fonmon and Melody Waite in St Nicholas.
