Rhinoplasty Crosby Merseyside (L23): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be required in order to aid breathing problems, following an injury, because of a birth defect or undertaken for personal reasons. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Crosby, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Crosby
The objective with reconstructive surgery is to address breathing problems that have arisen as a result of natural causes or external injuries. A person who's got a nasal obstruction as an underlying problem might suffer from sleep apnoea or have trouble breathing under exercise. A doctor's examination is essential to determine the cause, since there can be various reasons for these conditions
In many cases, a crooked or pushed-to-one-side midline wall of the nose (the septum) is a major contributing factor to septal deviation. Realigning the septum and addressing any other underlying issues can be done through septorhinoplasty surgery. Strengthening the shape of the nose and septum may involve inserting cartilage grafts in key internal areas of the nasal passage.
Reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty typically require a qualified surgeon and are performed under general anaesthetic, with most patients being able to go home on the same day following their operation. If the procedure is straightforward, you may be offered a local anaesthetic, which will be talked about during your consultation. The surgical process usually includes making a cut at the base of the nose to allow the surgeon access to internal areas. In many cases, there's no need to break the bones of the nose; they can simply be reshaped to promote easier breathing and better septum alignment. Furthermore, some cartilage could be adjusted or removed to strengthen the nose and achieve a more balanced shape. To help maintain the nose's shape, manage swelling, and assist recovery, splints or casts might be applied.
The incisions are made carefully to minimise scarring. Most people won't see any visible scars after healing. Recovery takes about a week or two. During this time, you'll need to rest and avoid strenuous activity. Applying ice to the area and following a nasal cleaning routine can help speed up healing.
A follow up appointment will be made to remove any splints or cast from the nose and at this point you should be able to return to work and normal daily life. It is advised to avoid any contact sports or sports that involve an accidental risk of your nose being struck (i.e. racquet sports, ball sports etc) for six to eight weeks after your operation. After this time the nose should have healed sufficiently for you to continue life as before.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Crosby
If you're reshaping your nose for personal reasons, it's known as cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery (also called a nose job), and it's considered elective surgery. This means that health insurance companies might not cover the cost of the procedure or follow-up consultations. However, it may be possible to have cosmetic rhinoplasty at the same time as a reconstructive operation covered by insurance or through the NHS with a GP's recommendation.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Crosby:
- Reduce or widen nostril size.
- Removal of protrusions or humps.
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Removal of blemishes or scars.
- Reducing the width of the nasal bones.
- Reshape a twisted or curved nose.
Cosmetic rhinoplasty can address these reasons and more, but any decision about surgery should first be discussed with your GP, before consulting an expert plastic surgeon in Crosby. A tailored plan should then be created for you as an individual, with realistic expectations about the surgery's outcome. It's important to remember that not everyone is a suitable candidate for cosmetic rhinoplasty. This could be due to factors such as skin and bone structure, medical history, potential adverse reactions, or the risk of worsening the issue.
Your surgeon will need to do a physical exam to figure out which areas can be improved. This examination will give them a look at the thickness of your skin, cartilage, and bone, and it might also help predict if there are any breathing changes that could happen post-surgery. You'll be asked questions about your expectations for the procedure and your reasoning for wanting a rhinoplasty. It's totally normal to feel a bit self-conscious during this time; discussing what we see as flaws isn't easy for anyone. Nonetheless, it's essential that the surgeon recognises you've put thought into this and understand the possible risks along with the expected outcomes of the surgery.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect Following Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- Do not wear contacts or glasses.
- Avoid jogging and other strenuous activities, contact sports in particular.
- To be careful when brushing your teeth to avoid movement and bumping of the top lip.
- Try not to laugh or use extreme facial expressions.
- Eat a high fibre diet until the recovery period has ended. This may seem a bit strange, however the theory is a high fibre diet will prevent constipation and thus avoid any straining and subsequent pressure in the surgery area.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.

If open rhinoplasty was used or the nasal bones have been broken and reset then there will be some swelling. For the first few days there may be some swelling on your eyes and the doctor may advise that you use a cold compress to reduce the swelling. For the nose to come out in its final shape it take 9 to 12 months.
