Rhinoplasty Fraserburgh Scotland (AB43): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be undertaken for personal reasons, so as to aid breathing difficulties, after an injury or because of a birth defect. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Fraserburgh, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Fraserburgh
Reconstructive rhinoplasty has the main intention of rectifying breathing problems that stem from natural causes or external injury. A patient who has a nasal obstruction as an underlying issue could experience sleep apnoea or have difficulty in breathing during exercise. A doctor's examination is essential to ascertain the cause, since there can be various reasons for these conditions
The midline wall of the nose (the septum) is crooked or pushed to one side in many cases of septal deviation. This is a major contributing factor. Septorhinoplasty, a type of surgery, can help to realign the septum and address any other underlying issues. Cartilage grafts may be inserted in key internal areas of the nasal passage to strengthen the shape of the nose and septum.
Reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty are commonly carried out under general anaesthetic by a qualified surgeon, with most people able to return home the same day. If the surgery is straightforward, the surgeon may suggest a local anaesthetic, which will be discussed during the consultation phase. The procedure involves making an incision at the base of the nose to access the internal areas. In many cases, the bones of the nose are reshaped and adjusted rather than broken, allowing for improved breathing and septum alignment. During this stage, cartilage might be removed or adjusted to strengthen the nose and create a more uniform shape. Splints or casts may be used to help maintain the nose's shape, reduce swelling, and aid in recovery.
Incisions at the base of the nose are placed very thoughtfully to help minimise any potential scarring, and many patients may not notice any visible scars after healing. Recovery times for those having reconstructive rhinoplasty are usually quite similar, with patients typically advised to take one to two weeks of rest. This includes steering clear of heavy exertion or intense breathing for at least a week. To help with recovery, it's recommended to use ice on the affected area, along with a guided nasal cleaning routine.
You will have a follow-up appointment to remove the splints or cast from your nose, and at this point, you should be able to go back to work and your regular daily life. It's important to avoid any contact sports or activities where there's a chance your nose could be accidentally hit (like racquet or ball sports) for around six to eight weeks following the surgery. By this time, the nose should have healed enough for you to resume normal life.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Fraserburgh
When someone wants to reshape their nose for personal reasons, it's referred to as cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery, commonly known as a nose job. This type of surgery is classified as elective, which means that your health insurance might not cover the expenses related to the procedure or any follow-up appointments. However, if you're undergoing reconstructive surgery that is covered by insurance or the National Health Service, it might be possible to have the cosmetic rhinoplasty done at the same time, but you'll need a recommendation from your GP.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Fraserburgh:
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Reducing the width of the nasal bones.
- Reshape a twisted or curved nose.
- Removal of protrusions or humps.
- Removal of scars or blemishes.
- Reduce or widen the size of the nostril.
There are numerous reasons for considering cosmetic rhinoplasty; however, any decisions surrounding surgery ought to be discussed first with your GP. Only after that should you arrange a consultation with a skilled plastic surgeon in your area. A personalised plan will then need to be created just for you, taking into account realistic expectations regarding the surgery's results. It's important to note that not everyone is a suitable candidate for cosmetic rhinoplasty. Factors like skin and bone structure, medical history, and the potential for adverse reactions or worsening of the situation can play a significant role.
A physical examination by the surgeon will determine which areas can be changed, assessing the thickness of your skin, bone, and cartilage. This examination may also predict any post-surgery changes in breathing. You'll discuss your expectations and reasons for seeking rhinoplasty. It's normal to feel self-conscious at this point because discussing perceived imperfections can be tough. However, it's important that the surgeon sees you've thought through the process and fully understand the risks and potential outcomes of the surgery.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect Following Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- Avoid jogging and other demanding activities, contact sports in particular.
- To be mindful when brushing your teeth to avoid bumping and movement of the top lip.
- Eat a high fibre diet until the end of the recovery period. This may seem a bit peculiar, but the theory is a high fibre diet will prevent constipation and therefore avoid any straining and subsequent pressure in the surgery area.
- Try not to use extreme facial expressions or laugh.
- Do not wear glasses or contact lenses.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.
