Rhinoplasty Washington Tyne and Wear (NE37): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be undertaken for personal reasons, so as to aid breathing difficulties, following an injury or due to a birth defect. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Washington, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Washington
In reconstructive rhinoplasty the objective is to treat issues with breathing from external injury or natural causes. A person in Washington who suffers from sleep apnoea or who has trouble breathing under exercise could have a nasal obstruction as the underlying problem. Examination will be necessary by a doctor to discover the precise cause, which could be due to any one of a number of factors.
Septal deviation is often caused by a crooked or pushed-to-one-side midline wall of the nose (the septum). This is a major factor in many cases. Surgery (known as septorhinoplasty) can help to realign the septum and address any other underlying issues that may be present. This may include inserting cartilage grafts in key internal areas of the nasal passage to strengthen the shape of the septum and nose.
Usually, a qualified surgeon performs reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty using general anaesthetic, and patients often return home the same day as their surgery. If the procedure is relatively uncomplicated, your surgeon may recommend a local anaesthetic option, which will be covered in your consultation. During the operation, an incision is made at the base of the nose to give access to the internal areas. In many situations, there's no need to break the nasal bones; instead, they're reshaped to promote easier breathing and improve septal alignment. At this stage, the surgeon might either remove or adjust some cartilage for added strength and a more uniform appearance. To help manage swelling and support healing, splints or casts are commonly used.
The areas where incisions are made at the base of the nose are thoughtfully selected to minimise scarring. As a result, many patients often don't notice any visible scars once their wounds have fully healed. Generally, recovery periods tend to be quite similar for all individuals undergoing reconstructive rhinoplasty, and it's common for patients to be advised to rest for one to two weeks. This means steering clear of any strenuous activities or heavy breathing for at least a week. To aid in recovery, applying ice to the affected area can be helpful, along with a specific nasal cleaning programme.
You'll need a follow-up appointment to take off any splints or casts from your nose, and by this time, you should be ready to go back to work and your normal daily activities. Just keep in mind that it's best to steer clear of contact sports or any activities where your nose might accidentally get hit, such as racquet games or ball sports, for about six to eight weeks post-surgery. After that, your nose should be healed enough for you to resume your usual routine.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Washington
When someone wants to reshape their nose for personal reasons, it's referred to as cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery, commonly known as a nose job. This type of surgery is classified as elective, which means that your health insurance might not cover the expenses related to the procedure or any follow-up appointments. However, if you're undergoing reconstructive surgery that is covered by insurance or the National Health Service, it might be possible to have the cosmetic rhinoplasty done at the same time, but you'll need a recommendation from your GP.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Washington:
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Removal of scars or blemishes.
- Reducing the width of the nasal bones.
- Reshape a curved or twisted nose.
- Widen or reduce the size of the nostril.
- Removal of humps or protrusions.
Cosmetic rhinoplasty can treat all these reasons and more, but it's vital to first discuss any surgery choice with your GP before going for a consultation with a plastic surgeon in Washington. Following this, a plan tailored to you can be developed, with a realistic perspective on what the surgery might achieve. Bear in mind that not everyone is a suitable candidate for cosmetic rhinoplasty; considerations such as skin and bone structure, medical background, possible adverse effects, and the risk of complications all play a role.
The surgeon will conduct a physical examination to see what areas could potentially be altered. Through this process, they'll evaluate the thickness of your skin, bone, and cartilage, and may use this information to foresee any changes to your breathing that might occur after the surgery. You're going to be asked about what you expect from the surgery and your reasons for wanting the rhinoplasty. It's completely normal to feel a bit self-conscious right now; after all, talking about perceived imperfections can be awkward. Still, it's very important for your surgeon to understand that you have carefully considered this and are aware of the risks and possible outcomes related to the surgery.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect Following Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- Avoid jogging and other strenuous activities, in particular contact sports.
- To be mindful when brushing your teeth to avoid bumping and movement of the upper lip.
- Try not to use extreme facial expressions or laugh.
- Do not wear spectacles or contacts.
- Eat a high fibre diet until the end of the recovery period. This may seem a little peculiar, however the theory is a high fibre diet will prevent constipation and hence avoid any straining and subsequent pressure in the surgery area.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.
