Rhinoplasty Blaydon Tyne and Wear (NE21): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be undertaken for personal reasons, after an injury, due to a birth defect or in order to aid breathing problems. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Blaydon, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Blaydon
Reconstructive rhinoplasty has the main aim of treating breathing problems which stem from natural causes or external injuries. A patient in Blaydon who suffers from sleep apnoea or who has trouble breathing during exercise could have a nasal obstruction as the underlying issue. A doctor's examination is essential to ascertain the cause, since this can be caused by a number of reasons.
Septal deviation is a major contributing factor in many cases. This is caused by a crooked or pushed-to-one-side midline wall of the nose (the septum). Septorhinoplasty, a type of surgery, can help to realign the septum and address any other underlying issues. Key internal areas of the nasal passage may be the site of cartilage graft insertion to strengthen the shape of the septum and nose.
In most cases, reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty are carried out under general anaesthetic by a qualified surgeon, allowing most patients to return home the same day after their surgery. If the procedure is not overly complex, your surgeon may recommend a local anaesthetic, which will be discussed during your consultation. The surgical process generally involves making an incision at the base of the nose to access internal structures. Often, the bones do not need to be broken; instead, they are reshaped and adjusted to improve breathing and align the septum. At this point, cartilage may be removed or adjusted to provide strength and a more uniform shape to the nose. To aid recovery, splints or casts are sometimes used to help maintain the shape of the nose, reduce swelling, and facilitate healing.
The locations for the incisions made at the base of the nose are selected with great care, aiming to minimise any noticeable scarring. As a result, many patients find that once their wounds have healed, they don't have any visible scars. Generally speaking, the recovery period is quite similar for all individuals undergoing reconstructive rhinoplasty, and patients are usually advised to take it easy for one to two weeks. This involves steering clear of any strenuous activity or heavy breathing for at least a week. To assist in the recovery process, it's a good idea to apply ice to the affected area, along with a specific nasal cleaning routine.
A follow-up appointment will be scheduled to remove any splints or cast from your nose, and at that point, you should be able to return to work and your normal daily activities. It's advised to avoid contact sports or any sports where there's a risk of your nose being struck (like racquet sports, ball sports, etc.) for six to eight weeks after the operation. After that, your nose should have healed sufficiently for you to continue life as usual.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Blaydon
Reshaping your nose for personal reasons is called cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery (also known as a nose job), and it's considered elective surgery. This means that health insurance companies might not cover the cost of the procedure or any follow-up consultations. However, you might be able to have cosmetic rhinoplasty at the same time as a reconstructive operation covered by insurance or through the NHS if your GP recommends it.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Blaydon:
- Reshape a twisted or curved nose.
- Removal of blemishes or scars.
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Widen or reduce nostril size.
- Reduction in width of the nasal bones.
- Removal of humps or protrusions.
There are various reasons, among others, that can be addressed through cosmetic rhinoplasty, but it's essential to first discuss any surgical decisions with your GP before seeking a consultation with an expert plastic surgeon in Blaydon. Once that conversation happens, a personalised plan can be developed just for you, along with a realistic outlook on what to expect from the surgery. It's important to keep in mind, though, that not everyone is a suitable candidate for cosmetic rhinoplasty. Factors such as a person's skin and bone structure, their medical history, potential adverse reactions, or even the risk of exacerbating the issue can all play a part in this.
As part of the process, your surgeon will carry out a physical examination to identify which areas could be modified. This assessment will allow them to gauge the thickness of your skin, cartilage, and bone and could also help in predicting any changes in your breathing that may happen following the surgery. You'll be asked about your expectations regarding the surgery as well as your reasons for wanting rhinoplasty. It's normal to feel a bit awkward at this stage; many people aren't comfortable discussing what they consider imperfections. Nevertheless, it's really important that your surgeon knows you've thought things through and are aware of both the risks and the potential results of the procedure.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect After Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- Avoid jogging, running and other demanding activities, contact sports in particular.
- To be mindful when brushing your teeth to avoid movement and bumping of the upper lip.
- Do not wear contacts or glasses.
- Eat a high fibre diet until the recovery period has ended. This might seem a little peculiar, however the theory is a high fibre diet will avoid constipation and thus avoid the need for straining and subsequent pressure to the surgery area.
- Try not to laugh or use extreme facial expressions.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.

Recovery After Rhinoplasty
A rhinoplasty patient's post-operative recovery experience differs from person to person but common pattern of recovery is for all. Mostly patient come back in normal position within in a week after surgery but its some side effects can last for several weeks or even months and it should not cause discomfort to you. If you feel any discomfort after rhinoplasty surgery you can call the cosmetic surgeon directly through the contact numbers for emergencies provided by them.
After rhinoplasty surgery there is some discomfort you have to face. To overcome the pain your surgeon will provide you with medication to control the pain and the time taken is 5 to 10 days.
A splint will be applied after surgery to keep nose in position and also help in healing. About a week at your post-operative check up the splint will usually be removed by the surgeon. If open rhinoplasty was used or the nasal bones have been broken and reset then there will be some swelling. For the first few days there may be some swelling on your eyes and the doctor may advise that you use a cold compress to reduce the swelling. Mostly swelling and bruising will be not seen after some weeks but some swelling may be seen for several months but it is not noticeable by others. For the nose to come out in its final shape it take 9 to 12 months.
During the recovery period the nose may look crooked and this irregular appearance will not seen after healing. Only in some cases revision rhinoplasty is needed to correct. In these cases irregular shape of the nose is due to patients not keeping their heads sufficiently high during the rhinoplasty recovery period, patients having a bias to sleeping on one side causing the nose to heal with a lean, or the newly operated nose receiving a bump so the rhinoplasty surgeons advice the patients to raise the head all time mainly during sleeping and also try to sleep on your back until your nose has healed.
In rhinoplasty surgery nose bleeding is common and you feel congested and this condition can last several weeks. You also feel you have a cold but avoid blowing your nose for around 4 weeks after surgery and this can make worse the healing process. You also feel tenderness on the nose if you are going outside then it is good for you to wear sun block.
Between 1 to 3 weeks after the rhinoplasty surgery one will be fit for their work. You should have to not do any hard work for six weeks. The hard work may effect on the proper healing of your nose and may lead to revision rhinoplasty.
