Rhinoplasty Hitchin Hertfordshire (SG4): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be undertaken for personal reasons, so as to aid breathing problems, following an injury or because of a birth defect. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Hitchin, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Hitchin
In reconstructive rhinoplasty the intention is to treat problems with breathing from natural causes or external injury. A person in Hitchin who suffers from sleep apnoea or who has difficulty in breathing under exercise could have a nasal obstruction as the underlying problem. Examination will be required by a trained doctor to ascertain the precise cause, which may be attributable to any one of a number of factors.
Septal deviation is a major contributing factor in many cases. This is caused by a crooked or pushed-to-one-side midline wall of the nose (the septum). Septorhinoplasty can help to address any underlying issues and realign the septum. Cartilage grafts may be inserted in the nasal passage to strengthen the shape of the septum and nose, in key internal areas.
Reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty are usually performed by a qualified surgeon under general anaesthetic, and most patients can look forward to returning home the same day as their surgery. If the procedure isn't too complicated, the surgeon might suggest using a local anaesthetic, but this will be reviewed during your consultation. The operation involves making an incision at the base of the nose to provide access to the inside. In many situations, the bones don't need to be broken; instead, they're reshaped and adjusted to improve airflow and align the septum. At this point, cartilage might be removed or adjusted to make the nose stronger and give it a more balanced shape. To aid recovery, splints or casts may be fitted to keep the nose stable and help reduce any swelling.
Carefully chosen, the incisions at the base of the nose aim to minimise any visible scarring, and many patients discover that they don't have noticeable scars once the healing process is complete. Recovery periods are quite uniform for everyone who undergoes reconstructive rhinoplasty, and patients are generally advised to rest for a week or two. This means that any form of exertion or heavy breathing should be avoided for at least the first week after surgery. It's also helpful to apply ice to the area that's affected, along with following a proper nasal cleaning routine to assist in recovery.
A follow-up appointment will be scheduled to remove any splints or cast from the nose, and at this point, you should be able to resume work and your usual daily activities. It is advised to steer clear of contact sports or any sports where there is a risk of accidental impact to the nose (such as racquet or ball sports) for about six to eight weeks after your surgery. By this time, your nose should have healed sufficiently to return to normal activities.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Hitchin
Reshaping your nose for personal reasons is referred to as cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery (or a nose job), and it's considered an elective surgery. This means that health insurance companies may not cover the cost of the procedure or any follow-up consultations. However, it might be possible to have cosmetic rhinoplasty along with a reconstructive operation covered by insurance or through the NHS, based on a GP's recommendation.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Hitchin:
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Reducing the width of the nasal bones.
- Reshape a twisted or curved nose.
- Removal of humps or protrusions.
- Removal of scars or blemishes.
- Reduce or widen the size of the nostril.
If you're thinking of cosmetic rhinoplasty, there are many reasons for it. However, the first step should always involve talking to your GP before arranging a consultation with an experienced plastic surgeon in Hitchin. A unique plan will then be specifically designed for you, taking into account what you can reasonably expect from the surgery. It's crucial to understand that not everyone will be a suitable candidate for cosmetic rhinoplasty due to their skin and bone structure, medical background, and the potential for negative reactions or exacerbating the situation.
A physical examination will be undertaken by your surgeon to assess what areas can be changed. This will determine the thickness of your skin, bone and cartilage, and may also be used to predict any changes in your breathing that could occur post-surgery. You will be asked about your expectations of surgery and why you want any rhinoplasty to be performed. It is normal to feel self conscious at this point; no-one likes to discuss what they see as imperfections in themselves, but it is vitally important that the surgeon sees you have thought through the process and fully understand the possible risks and potential outcomes of surgery.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect Following Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- Eat a high fibre diet until the recovery period has ended. This might seem a bit strange, but the theory is a high fibre diet will prevent constipation and thus avoid the need for straining and resulting pressure to the surgery area.
- Don't wear spectacles or contacts.
- Try not to laugh or use extreme facial expressions.
- Avoid jogging, running and other demanding activities, particularly contact sports.
- To be cautious when brushing teeth to avoid movement and bumping of the top lip.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.

A splint will be applied after surgery to keep nose in position and also help in healing. About a week at your post-operative check up the splint will usually be removed by the surgeon. If open rhinoplasty was used or the nasal bones have been broken and reset then there will be some swelling. For the first few days there may be some swelling on your eyes and the doctor may advise that you use a cold compress to reduce the swelling. Mostly swelling and bruising will be not seen after some weeks but some swelling may be seen for several months but it is not noticeable by others. For the nose to come out in its final shape it take 9 to 12 months.
