Rhinoplasty Ascot Berkshire (SL5): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be required in order to aid breathing problems, due to a birth defect, following an injury or undertaken for personal reasons. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Ascot, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Ascot
Reconstructive rhinoplasty has the main goal of curing breathing issues which stem from external injuries or natural causes. A person who has difficulty in breathing under exercise, or suffers from sleep apnoea, may have an underlying issue like a nasal obstruction. This can be caused by a number of reasons and examination by a doctor is required to discover the precise cause.
In many cases, septal deviation is caused by a crooked or pushed-to-one-side midline wall of the nose (the septum). Septorhinoplasty, a type of surgery, can help to realign the septum and address any other underlying issues. Cartilage grafts may be inserted in key internal areas of the nasal passage to strengthen the shape of the nose and septum.
Reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty are typically performed under a general anaesthetic by an experienced surgeon, with most patients returning home the same day. If the surgery is relatively simple, a local anaesthetic might be considered, and this will be discussed during the consultation stage. The procedure involves making an incision at the base of the nose to access internal areas. Usually, the nasal bones do not need to be broken; instead, they are reshaped and adjusted to improve breathing and septum alignment. Cartilage may be adjusted or removed to provide extra support and a consistent shape. Splints or casts are placed to help reduce swelling, maintain shape, and aid recovery.
The placement of incisions at the base of the nose is carefully planned to minimise visible scarring, and most patients find that no noticeable scars remain once healing is complete. Recovery times are generally similar for all patients undergoing reconstructive rhinoplasty, with a recommended rest period of one to two weeks. This includes avoiding strenuous activities and heavy breathing for at least the first week. Applying ice to the affected area can help with recovery, alongside a prescribed nasal cleaning regimen.
There will be a follow-up appointment arranged to take off any splints or cast from your nose, and at this stage, you should be able to return to work and your daily activities. Avoiding contact sports or sports with a risk of accidental impact to the nose (such as ball or racquet sports) is advised for six to eight weeks after the procedure. By this point, the nose should be sufficiently healed to return to your usual activities.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Ascot
When it comes to reshaping a nose for personal reasons, this is known as cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery, often called a nose job. It's seen as an elective surgery, which implies that health insurance providers might not cover the costs of the procedure or any follow-up visits and treatments. However, there may be instances where you can have cosmetic rhinoplasty at the same time as a reconstructive surgery that is being done under an insurance plan or via the National Health Service, with a recommendation from your GP.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Ascot:
- Reduction in width of the nasal bones.
- Removal of humps or protrusions.
- Reshape a curved or twisted nose.
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Removal of blemishes or scars.
- Widen or reduce nostril size.
There are plenty of reasons to consider getting cosmetic rhinoplasty, but it's essential to have an initial discussion with your GP before moving on to see a specialist plastic surgeon in Ascot. Following that, a customised strategy will be put together just for you, along with a clear idea of what you can realistically expect from the surgery. It's worth mentioning that not all individuals are appropriate candidates for this procedure, given factors such as their skin and bone structure, existing medical history, and the risks of adverse reactions or potential complications.
A physical examination will be performed by your surgeon to evaluate the areas that might be adjusted. This will help them assess the thickness of your skin, bone, and cartilage, and may also indicate any changes to your breathing that could occur post-surgery. You'll be asked about your expectations and reasons for wanting rhinoplasty. Feeling self-conscious is perfectly normal at this stage - nobody likes talking about their perceived flaws - but it's crucial that the surgeon knows you've thought the process through and understand the potential risks and outcomes.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect After Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- To be cautious when brushing your teeth to avoid bumping and movement of the upper lip.
- Avoid jogging and other demanding activities, particularly contact sports.
- Try not to laugh or use extreme facial expressions.
- Do not wear spectacles or contacts.
- Eat a high fibre diet until the recovery period has ended. This may seem a little peculiar, however the theory is a high fibre diet will avoid constipation and thus avoid the need for straining and subsequent pressure to the surgery area.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.
