Rhinoplasty Claygate Surrey (KT10): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be undertaken for personal reasons, due to a birth defect, following an injury or in order to aid breathing difficulties. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Claygate, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Claygate
Reconstructive rhinoplasty has the main objective of treating breathing problems that stem from natural causes or external injuries. A patient who has difficulty in breathing during exercise, or suffers from sleep apnoea, may have an underlying issue like a nasal obstruction. This can be down to various reasons and examination by a doctor is needed to ascertain the precise cause.
A major contributing factor in many cases is septal deviation, when the midline wall of the nose (the septum) is crooked or pushed to one side. Surgery known as septorhinoplasty can help to realign the septum and address any other underlying issues. Inserting cartilage grafts in key internal areas of the nasal passage is one way to strengthen the shape of the nose and septum.
Typically, reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty are carried out by a qualified surgeon under general anaesthetic, and most patients can expect to go home the same day as their operation. If your procedure isn't particularly complex, the surgeon might recommend using a local anaesthetic instead, but this will be talked about during your consultation. The surgery itself involves making an incision at the base of the nose to access the internal structures. In many instances, the bones don't need to be broken but are instead reshaped and adjusted for better breathing and proper septum alignment. At this point, some cartilage may be removed or modified to enhance the nose's strength and achieve a more even shape. To help maintain the nose's configuration, minimise swelling, and support recovery, splints or casts might be used.
The surgeon makes small incisions at the base of the nose to minimise scarring. Most people won't see any visible scars after healing. Recovery takes about a week or two. During this time, you'll need to rest and avoid strenuous activity. Applying ice to the area and following a nasal cleaning routine can help speed up healing.
A follow-up appointment will be set up for removing any splints or casts from your nose, and by then, you should be ready to return to work and your usual daily routine. It's best to steer clear of contact sports or any activities that could accidentally lead to your nose being struck, such as racquet sports or ball games, for about six to eight weeks post-operation. Once this period has passed, your nose should be well enough healed for you to go back to living your life as before.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Claygate
Reshaping your nose for personal reasons is referred to as cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery (or a nose job), and it's considered an elective surgery. This means that health insurance companies may not cover the cost of the procedure or any follow-up consultations. However, it might be possible to have cosmetic rhinoplasty along with a reconstructive operation covered by insurance or through the NHS, based on a GP's recommendation.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Claygate:
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Reshape a curved or twisted nose.
- Removal of humps or protrusions.
- Removal of blemishes or scars.
- Reducing the width of the nasal bones.
- Widen or reduce nostril size.
Cosmetic rhinoplasty can address all of these concerns and many more, but it's crucial to first speak with your GP about the decision to undergo surgery. Afterward, a consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon in Claygate can be scheduled. A personalised plan will be developed specifically for you, and it's important to have realistic expectations about what the surgery can achieve. Also, remember that not everyone will be an appropriate candidate for cosmetic rhinoplasty. Factors such as skin and bone structure, past medical history, and the risk of adverse reactions must all be considered, as there's a possibility of worsening the situation.
Your surgeon will need to conduct a physical examination to figure out what areas can be modified. This will involve checking the thickness of your skin, bone, and cartilage, and it might also help in predicting any breathing changes that could arise after the surgery. You'll be asked questions about your expectations for the surgery and why you want rhinoplasty. It's natural to feel self-conscious at this stage; discussing personal imperfections can be uncomfortable for anyone. However, it's extremely important for the surgeon to know that you have considered the process thoroughly and are aware of the potential risks and possible outcomes of the surgery.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect After Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- Eat a high fibre diet until the recovery period has ended. This may seem a bit peculiar, however the theory is a high fibre diet will avoid constipation and thus avoid any straining and resulting pressure in the surgery area.
- Avoid running, jogging and other strenuous activities, contact sports in particular.
- To be cautious when brushing teeth to avoid movement and bumping of the top lip.
- Do not wear contacts or glasses.
- Try not to use extreme facial expressions or laugh.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.
