Rhinoplasty London Greater London (SW1): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be required in order to aid breathing problems, due to a birth defect, following an injury or undertaken for personal reasons. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in London, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty London
In reconstructive rhinoplasty the aim is to treat problems with breathing from external injuries or natural causes. A person who's got a nasal obstruction as an underlying problem might suffer from sleep apnoea or have difficulty in breathing during exercise. This can be due to a number of reasons and a doctor's examination is required to determine the precise cause.
A crooked or pushed-to-one-side midline wall of the nose (the septum) is a major contributing factor in many cases of septal deviation. Realigning the septum and addressing any other underlying issues can be done through septorhinoplasty surgery. To strengthen the shape of the nose and septum, cartilage grafts may be inserted in key internal areas of the nasal passage.
Reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty are typically performed under a general anaesthetic by an experienced surgeon, with most patients returning home the same day. If the surgery is relatively simple, a local anaesthetic might be considered, and this will be discussed during the consultation stage. The procedure involves making an incision at the base of the nose to access internal areas. Usually, the nasal bones do not need to be broken; instead, they are reshaped and adjusted to improve breathing and septum alignment. Cartilage may be adjusted or removed to provide extra support and a consistent shape. Splints or casts are placed to help reduce swelling, maintain shape, and aid recovery.
The points where incisions are made at the base of the nose are chosen with care to minimise noticeable scarring, and many patients will find that once healed, there are no visible scars. Recovery periods for reconstructive rhinoplasty are similar for everyone, with patients being advised to rest for one or two weeks. This means no exertion or heavy breathing for at least a week. Applying ice to the affected area can help with recovery, along with following a nasal cleaning programme.
A follow-up appointment will be scheduled to take off any splints or casts from your nose, and by this time, you should be ready to get back to work and your usual daily routine. However, it's recommended that you steer clear of contact sports or any activities that might accidentally put your nose at risk of being hit - like racquet sports or ball games - for about six to eight weeks following your surgery. After this period, your nose should have healed enough for you to resume your normal life.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty London
Undergoing cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery, or a nose job, for personal aesthetic reasons is classified as an elective procedure. This typically means that health insurance will not cover the surgery's costs or any subsequent consultations or related procedures. However, if combined with a reconstructive surgery that is covered under an insurance policy or accessed via the National Health Service through a GP's recommendation, it might be possible to reduce personal expenses.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in London:
- Reshape a curved or twisted nose.
- Widen or reduce the size of the nostril.
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Removal of humps or protrusions.
- Reduction in width of the nasal bones.
- Removal of blemishes or scars.
There are various reasons, among others, that can be addressed through cosmetic rhinoplasty, but it's essential to first discuss any surgical decisions with your GP before seeking a consultation with an expert plastic surgeon in London. Once that conversation happens, a personalised plan can be developed just for you, along with a realistic outlook on what to expect from the surgery. It's important to keep in mind, though, that not everyone is a suitable candidate for cosmetic rhinoplasty. Factors such as a person's skin and bone structure, their medical history, potential adverse reactions, or even the risk of exacerbating the issue can all play a part in this.
During your physical examination, the surgeon will assess which areas can be changed by examining the thickness of your skin, bone, and cartilage. This may also help in predicting any breathing changes after surgery. You'll discuss your expectations and reasons for wanting rhinoplasty. Feeling self-conscious at this stage is normal since discussing perceived imperfections is uncomfortable for most. However, it's crucial that the surgeon sees you've thought everything through and fully understand the possible risks and outcomes.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect Following Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- Avoid jogging, running and other strenuous activities, particularly contact sports.
- Try not to laugh or use extreme facial expressions.
- Eat a high fibre diet until the end of the recovery period. This may seem a little peculiar, but the theory is a high fibre diet will prevent constipation and thus avoid the need for straining and resulting pressure in the surgery area.
- Do not wear contact lenses or spectacles.
- To be cautious when brushing your teeth to avoid bumping and movement of the top lip.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.
