Rhinoplasty Horndean Hampshire (PO8): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be undertaken for personal reasons, in order to aid breathing difficulties, because of a birth defect or following an injury. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Horndean, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Horndean
In reconstructive rhinoplasty the aim is to address issues with breathing from natural causes or external injuries. A person in Horndean who suffers from sleep apnoea or who has difficulty in breathing during exercise may have a nasal obstruction as the underlying problem. This can be caused by any number of reasons and examination by a doctor is essential to discover the exact cause.
In many cases, a crooked or pushed-to-one-side midline wall of the nose (the septum) is a major contributing factor to septal deviation. Realigning the septum and addressing any underlying issues are both possible with what is known as septorhinoplasty surgery. The shape of the nose and septum may be strengthened by inserting cartilage grafts in key internal areas of the nasal passage.
Reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty are typically performed under a general anaesthetic by an experienced surgeon, with most patients returning home the same day. If the surgery is relatively simple, a local anaesthetic might be considered, and this will be discussed during the consultation stage. The procedure involves making an incision at the base of the nose to access internal areas. Usually, the nasal bones do not need to be broken; instead, they are reshaped and adjusted to improve breathing and septum alignment. Cartilage may be adjusted or removed to provide extra support and a consistent shape. Splints or casts are placed to help reduce swelling, maintain shape, and aid recovery.
The areas where incisions are made at the base of the nose are thoughtfully selected to minimise scarring. As a result, many patients often don't notice any visible scars once their wounds have fully healed. Generally, recovery periods tend to be quite similar for all individuals undergoing reconstructive rhinoplasty, and it's common for patients to be advised to rest for one to two weeks. This means steering clear of any strenuous activities or heavy breathing for at least a week. To aid in recovery, applying ice to the affected area can be helpful, along with a specific nasal cleaning programme.
An appointment will be set up to remove the splints or cast from your nose, and at that point, you should be able to get back to work and normal daily activities. It's advised to avoid any contact sports or sports where there's a chance of an accidental blow to the nose (like racquet sports or ball games) for about six to eight weeks post-surgery. By then, your nose should have healed enough to continue your normal routine.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Horndean
The procedure of reshaping the nose for personal desires is often termed cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery - it's commonly known as a nose job. Since it is classified as elective surgery, it's likely that health insurance companies will not reimburse the costs involved for the surgery or any necessary follow-ups. It is, however, a possibility to have cosmetic rhinoplasty performed at the same time as a reconstructive surgery that's insured or available through the National Health Service, if your GP refers you.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Horndean:
- Widen or reduce nostril size.
- Removal of blemishes or scars.
- Reduction in width of the nasal bones.
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Reshape a curved or twisted nose.
- Removal of protrusions or humps.
While cosmetic rhinoplasty can treat all these reasons and more, it's essential to discuss any surgery decisions with your GP initially, before seeing an expert plastic surgeon in Horndean. A customised plan should then be developed for you, considering your individual needs and setting realistic expectations for the surgery's results. It's important to note that not everyone may be suitable for cosmetic rhinoplasty. Factors such as skin and bone structure, medical history, potential adverse reactions, or the risk of worsening the condition must be considered.
Your surgeon will need to do a physical exam to figure out which areas can be improved. This examination will give them a look at the thickness of your skin, cartilage, and bone, and it might also help predict if there are any breathing changes that could happen post-surgery. You'll be asked questions about your expectations for the procedure and your reasoning for wanting a rhinoplasty. It's totally normal to feel a bit self-conscious during this time; discussing what we see as flaws isn't easy for anyone. Nonetheless, it's essential that the surgeon recognises you've put thought into this and understand the possible risks along with the expected outcomes of the surgery.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect After Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- Eat a high fibre diet until the end of the recovery period. This may seem a bit strange, however the theory is a high fibre diet will avoid constipation and hence avoid any straining and resulting pressure in the surgery area.
- Avoid jogging and other demanding activities, contact sports in particular.
- Try not to use extreme facial expressions or laugh.
- To be cautious when brushing your teeth to avoid bumping and movement of the top lip.
- Don't wear spectacles or contact lenses.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.
