Rhinoplasty Shepperton Surrey (TW17): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be required because of a birth defect, in order to aid breathing difficulties, after an injury or undertaken for personal reasons. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Shepperton, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Shepperton
In reconstructive rhinoplasty the intention is to treat problems with breathing from external injury or natural causes. A patient who has difficulty in breathing under exercise, or is suffering from sleep apnoea, may have an underlying issue like a nasal obstruction. A doctor's examination is required to discover the cause, as there can be various reasons for this
Septal deviation is a major contributing factor in many cases. This is caused by a crooked or pushed-to-one-side midline wall of the nose (the septum). Septorhinoplasty can help to address any underlying issues and realign the septum. Strengthening the shape of the nose and septum may involve inserting cartilage grafts in key internal areas of the nasal passage.
When it comes to reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty, these procedures are usually done under general anaesthetic by a qualified surgeon, with most patients expected to go home the same day. If your surgery isn't too complicated, your surgeon might recommend a local anaesthetic, but this will be discussed during the consultation. The surgical procedure typically involves an incision at the base of the nose to gain access to the internal areas. In many cases, there's no need to break the bones of the nose; instead, they are reshaped and adjusted to improve breathing and align the septum. At this point, some cartilage may be removed or adjusted to enhance the overall strength and shape of the nose. To help with recovery, splints or casts may be placed to maintain the nose's shape and minimise swelling.
Surgeons take great care in determining the points where incisions are made at the base of the nose, aiming to minimise visible scarring. Many patients will find that, once healed, they don't notice any scars at all. In terms of recovery, most patients of reconstructive rhinoplasty can expect a similar timeline, typically advised to rest for one to two weeks. This means they should avoid any heavy exertion or strenuous breathing for at least a week. Additionally, applying ice to the area can help with recovery, along with a proper nasal cleaning regimen.
You'll have a follow-up appointment scheduled to take off any splints or casts from your nose, and by then, you should be ready to get back to work and your usual daily routine. Just a heads-up - you're advised to steer clear of contact sports or any activities that might put your nose at risk of being hit, such as racquet sports or ball games, for a period of six to eight weeks post-op. After that timeframe, your nose ought to be healed enough for you to carry on with life as you did before.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Shepperton
Undergoing cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery, or a nose job, for personal aesthetic reasons is classified as an elective procedure. This typically means that health insurance will not cover the surgery's costs or any subsequent consultations or related procedures. However, if combined with a reconstructive surgery that is covered under an insurance policy or accessed via the National Health Service through a GP's recommendation, it might be possible to reduce personal expenses.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Shepperton:
- Reduce or widen the size of the nostril.
- Reshape a curved or twisted nose.
- Reducing the width of the nasal bones.
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Removal of blemishes or scars.
- Removal of protrusions or humps.
Cosmetic rhinoplasty can address all of these concerns and more, but any decision to go forward with surgery should first be discussed with your GP. After that, a consultation with an expert plastic surgeon in Shepperton is advisable. A personalised plan can then be crafted specifically for you, alongside setting realistic expectations about what the surgery can achieve. It's important to bear in mind that cosmetic rhinoplasty isn't suitable for everyone. Factors like skin and bone structure, medical history, the potential for adverse reactions, or even the risk of worsening the issue could make some individuals less ideal candidates.
Your surgeon will assess you to determine what can be changed. They'll examine your skin, bone, and cartilage, and consider any potential breathing implications of the surgery. You'll also be asked about your expectations and reasons for wanting rhinoplasty. It's normal to feel self-conscious, but it's vital to be open and honest with your surgeon. They need to see that you've thought carefully about the process and fully understand the potential risks and benefits.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect After Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- To be cautious when brushing your teeth to avoid bumping and movement of the top lip.
- Eat a high fibre diet until the end of the recovery period. This may seem a bit strange, but the theory is a high fibre diet will avoid constipation and thus avoid any straining and subsequent pressure in the surgery area.
- Do not wear contact lenses or spectacles.
- Avoid jogging, running and other strenuous activities, especially contact sports.
- Try not to use extreme facial expressions or laugh.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.

Rhinoplasty Recovery
A rhinoplasty patient's post-operative recovery experience differs from person to person but common pattern of recovery is for all. Mostly patient come back in normal position within in a week after surgery but its some side effects can last for several weeks or even months and it should not cause discomfort to you. If you feel any discomfort after rhinoplasty surgery you can call the doctor directly through the contact numbers for emergencies provided by them.
After rhinoplasty surgery there is some discomfort you have to face. To overcome the pain your surgeon will provide you with medication to control the pain and the time taken is 5 to 10 days.
A splint will be applied after surgery to keep nose in position and also help in healing. About a week at your post-operative check up the splint will usually be removed by the surgeon. If open rhinoplasty was used or the nasal bones have been broken and reset then there will be some swelling. For the first few days there may be some swelling on your eyes and the doctor may advise that you use a cold compress to reduce the swelling. Mostly swelling and bruising will be not seen after some weeks but some swelling may be seen for several months but it is not noticeable by others. For the nose to come out in its final shape it take 9 to 12 months.
In rhinoplasty surgery nose bleeding is common and you feel congested and this condition can last several weeks. You also feel you have a cold but avoid blowing your nose for around 4 weeks after surgery and this can make worse the healing process. You also feel tenderness on the nose if you are going outside then it is good for you to wear sun block.
Between 1 to 3 weeks after the rhinoplasty surgery one will be fit for their work. You should have to not do any hard work for six weeks. The hard work may effect on the proper healing of your nose and may lead to revision rhinoplasty.
