Rhinoplasty Kidsgrove Staffordshire (ST7): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be undertaken for personal reasons, so as to aid breathing problems, due to a birth defect or following an injury. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Kidsgrove, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Kidsgrove
Reconstructive rhinoplasty has the main objective of rectifying breathing issues which stem from natural causes or external injury. A patient who has difficulty in breathing during exercise, or is suffering from sleep apnoea, might have an underlying problem like a nasal obstruction. A doctor's examination is essential to determine the cause, as there can be various reasons for these conditions
In many cases, a crooked or pushed-to-one-side midline wall of the nose (the septum) is a major contributing factor to septal deviation. Septorhinoplasty, a type of surgery, can help to realign the septum and address any other underlying issues. Strengthening the shape of the nose and septum may involve inserting cartilage grafts in key internal areas of the nasal passage.
When it comes to reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty, these procedures are generally conducted under general anaesthetic by an experienced surgeon, allowing most individuals to return home on the same day. Should your surgery be straightforward, the surgeon might propose a local anaesthetic, which will be discussed during your initial consultation. The procedure involves creating an incision at the base of the nose, granting access to the internal areas. Often, the bones don't require breaking; they can simply be reshaped and adjusted to improve breathing and align the septum. At this point, cartilage may also be removed or modified to bolster the nose and create a more uniform appearance. To assist with recovery and minimise swelling, splints or casts could be applied to help maintain the nose's shape.
The points where incisions are made at the base of the nose are chosen with care to minimise noticeable scarring, and many patients will find that once healed, there are no visible scars. Recovery periods for reconstructive rhinoplasty are similar for everyone, with patients being advised to rest for one or two weeks. This means no exertion or heavy breathing for at least a week. Applying ice to the affected area can help with recovery, along with following a nasal cleaning programme.
A follow-up appointment will be arranged to take off any splints or cast from your nose, and at this stage, you should be able to return to work and your regular daily activities. It's advised to avoid contact sports or any sports where there's an accidental risk of your nose being struck (like racquet sports, ball sports, etc.) for six to eight weeks post-operation. By then, your nose should have healed sufficiently for you to get back to your normal life.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Kidsgrove
Reshaping the nose for personal reasons is known as cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery (also referred to as a nose job) and is considered elective surgery. This means that health insurance companies may not cover the cost of the procedure or any follow-up consultations or procedures. However, it might be possible to have cosmetic rhinoplasty done at the same time as a reconstructive procedure, which could be covered by insurance or provided through the National Health Service following a recommendation from your GP.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Kidsgrove:
- Reduction in width of the nasal bones.
- Reduce or widen the size of the nostril.
- Removal of protrusions or humps.
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Removal of blemishes or scars.
- Reshape a curved or twisted nose.
There are various reasons, among others, that can be addressed through cosmetic rhinoplasty, but it's essential to first discuss any surgical decisions with your GP before seeking a consultation with an expert plastic surgeon in Kidsgrove. Once that conversation happens, a personalised plan can be developed just for you, along with a realistic outlook on what to expect from the surgery. It's important to keep in mind, though, that not everyone is a suitable candidate for cosmetic rhinoplasty. Factors such as a person's skin and bone structure, their medical history, potential adverse reactions, or even the risk of exacerbating the issue can all play a part in this.
Your surgeon will carry out a physical examination to assess which areas might be adjusted. This will help them determine the thickness of your skin, bone, and cartilage, and it may also help predict any changes to your breathing after the surgery. You'll be asked about your expectations for the procedure and your reasons for wanting rhinoplasty. It's natural to feel self-conscious discussing what you might see as imperfections, but it's essential for the surgeon to know you've considered the process carefully and understand both the risks and potential outcomes of surgery.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect Following Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- Avoid running, jogging and other strenuous activities, in particular contact sports.
- Do not wear spectacles or contacts.
- To be cautious when brushing teeth to avoid bumping and movement of the upper lip.
- Eat a high fibre diet until the recovery period has ended. This may seem a bit peculiar, however the theory is a high fibre diet will avoid constipation and thus avoid any straining and subsequent pressure to the surgery area.
- Try not to laugh or use extreme facial expressions.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.
