Rhinoplasty Weybridge Surrey (KT13): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be undertaken for personal reasons, following an injury, in order to aid breathing difficulties or due to a birth defect. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Weybridge, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Weybridge
Reconstructive rhinoplasty has the main intention of rectifying breathing problems which stem from external injuries or natural causes. A patient who's got a nasal obstruction as an underlying issue might suffer from sleep apnoea or have difficulty in breathing during exercise. A doctor's examination is essential to discover the cause, as this can be brought on by a number of reasons.
Septal deviation is a major contributing factor in many cases. This is caused by a crooked or pushed-to-one-side midline wall of the nose (the septum). Realigning the septum and addressing any underlying issues are both possible with what is known as septorhinoplasty surgery. Cartilage grafts may be inserted in the nasal passage to strengthen the shape of the septum and nose, in key internal areas.
Reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty are typically performed under general anaesthetic by a skilled surgeon, and most patients can expect to go home the same day. If the procedure is not overly complex, the surgeon may suggest using a local anaesthetic, which will be covered during your consultation. The surgery involves making an incision at the nose base to access the internal areas. Often, the nasal bones aren't broken but rather reshaped and adjusted to facilitate better breathing and septum alignment. During this stage, cartilage might be removed or adjusted to strengthen the nose and achieve a more uniform shape. Splints or casts are usually applied to help maintain the nose's shape, reduce swelling, and support recovery.
Carefully chosen, the incisions at the base of the nose aim to minimise any visible scarring, and many patients discover that they don't have noticeable scars once the healing process is complete. Recovery periods are quite uniform for everyone who undergoes reconstructive rhinoplasty, and patients are generally advised to rest for a week or two. This means that any form of exertion or heavy breathing should be avoided for at least the first week after surgery. It's also helpful to apply ice to the area that's affected, along with following a proper nasal cleaning routine to assist in recovery.
You will have a follow-up appointment to remove the splints or cast from your nose, and at this point, you should be able to go back to work and your regular daily life. It's important to avoid any contact sports or activities where there's a chance your nose could be accidentally hit (like racquet or ball sports) for around six to eight weeks following the surgery. By this time, the nose should have healed enough for you to resume normal life.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Weybridge
If you are looking to change your nose for personal reasons, you would be considering what's called cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery, commonly known as a nose job. This surgery is classified as elective, so keep in mind that health insurance companies often don't cover its cost or any follow-up treatments. Still, it might be feasible to carry out cosmetic rhinoplasty at the same time as a reconstructive procedure that's insured or available through the National Health Service, just as long as you have a referral from your GP.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Weybridge:
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Reduce or widen nostril size.
- Reshape a twisted or curved nose.
- Removal of blemishes or scars.
- Removal of humps or protrusions.
- Reducing the width of the nasal bones.
Cosmetic rhinoplasty can treat all these reasons and more, but it's vital to first discuss any surgery choice with your GP before going for a consultation with a plastic surgeon in Weybridge. Following this, a plan tailored to you can be developed, with a realistic perspective on what the surgery might achieve. Bear in mind that not everyone is a suitable candidate for cosmetic rhinoplasty; considerations such as skin and bone structure, medical background, possible adverse effects, and the risk of complications all play a role.
Your surgeon will examine you to see what's possible with rhinoplasty. They'll check your skin, bone, and cartilage, and consider any potential breathing changes after surgery. You'll also discuss your expectations and motivations for the procedure. It's okay to feel a bit nervous, but it's important to be open and honest with your surgeon. They need to know that you've thought about everything and are aware of the potential risks and benefits.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect After Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- Try not to laugh or use extreme facial expressions.
- Avoid running, jogging and other strenuous activities, in particular contact sports.
- Don't wear contact lenses or spectacles.
- Eat a high fibre diet until the recovery period has ended. This may seem a bit peculiar, but the theory is a high fibre diet will prevent constipation and therefore avoid any straining and resulting pressure in the surgery area.
- To be mindful when brushing your teeth to avoid movement and bumping of the top lip.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.
