Rhinoplasty West Kingsdown Kent (TN15): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be undertaken for personal reasons, so as to aid breathing difficulties, after an injury or because of a birth defect. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in West Kingsdown, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty West Kingsdown
Reconstructive rhinoplasty has the main goal of curing breathing issues which stem from natural causes or external injury. A person who has difficulty in breathing under exercise, or suffers from sleep apnoea, may have an underlying issue such as a nasal obstruction. This can be caused by a number of reasons and a doctor's examination is needed to discover the cause.
In many cases, septal deviation is caused by a crooked or pushed-to-one-side midline wall of the nose (the septum). Realigning the septum and addressing any underlying issues are both possible with what is known as septorhinoplasty surgery. Cartilage grafts may be inserted in key internal areas of the nasal passage to strengthen the shape of the nose and septum.
Typically, reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty are carried out by a qualified surgeon under general anaesthetic, and most patients can expect to go home the same day as their operation. If your procedure isn't particularly complex, the surgeon might recommend using a local anaesthetic instead, but this will be talked about during your consultation. The surgery itself involves making an incision at the base of the nose to access the internal structures. In many instances, the bones don't need to be broken but are instead reshaped and adjusted for better breathing and proper septum alignment. At this point, some cartilage may be removed or modified to enhance the nose's strength and achieve a more even shape. To help maintain the nose's configuration, minimise swelling, and support recovery, splints or casts might be used.
The incision points at the base of the nose are meticulously chosen to minimise noticeable scarring, so many patients won't see visible scars once the wounds have healed. Recovery periods are generally the same for all reconstructive rhinoplasty patients, who will be advised to rest for one or two weeks. This involves avoiding exertion or heavy breathing for at least a week. Ice should be applied to the affected area to aid recovery, along with a directed programme of nasal cleaning.
Following your operation, a follow-up appointment will be arranged to remove any splints or casts from your nose, and you should find that you can return to work and your normal daily activities at that point. It's really best to avoid any contact sports or anything that could lead to accidental bumps to your nose, like ball games or racquet sports, for about six to eight weeks after surgery. Once this time has passed, your nose should be well on its way to healing, allowing you to resume your previous lifestyle.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty West Kingsdown
Reshaping the nose for personal reasons is known as cosmetic rhinoplasty, or simply a nose job. This type of surgery falls under elective procedures, which means that health insurance may not cover the costs associated with the surgery or any follow-up consultations and procedures. It's worth noting that you might be able to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty at the same time as a reconstructive surgery that is covered by insurance or offered through the National Health Service, provided your GP recommends it.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in West Kingsdown:
- Widen or reduce the size of the nostril.
- Reducing the width of the nasal bones.
- Removal of scars or blemishes.
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Removal of humps or protrusions.
- Reshape a curved or twisted nose.
All of these reasons and more can be treated with cosmetic rhinoplasty but any surgery decision should be discussed with your GP in the first instance, before a consult by an expert plastic surgeon in West Kingsdown. A tailored plan should then be constructed for you as an individual alongside a realistic expectation about the outcome of any surgery. It must be considered that not all people may be suitable candidates for cosmetic rhinoplasty. This may be due to an individual's medical history, skin and bone structure, the risk of making matters worse, or the possibility of adverse reactions.
Your surgeon will perform a physical examination to evaluate which areas can be altered. This examination helps to determine the thickness of your skin, bone, and cartilage and might also be useful in predicting any changes to your breathing after the surgery. During this process, you'll be asked about what you expect from the procedure and your reasons for wanting rhinoplasty. Feeling a bit self-conscious at this stage is completely normal; after all, most people don't enjoy discussing what they perceive as flaws in themselves. However, it is crucial for the surgeon to see that you've given this matter some serious thought and understand the potential risks and outcomes involved with the surgery.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect After Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- Don't wear contacts or glasses.
- To be cautious when brushing teeth to avoid movement and bumping of the top lip.
- Try not to use extreme facial expressions or laugh.
- Eat a high fibre diet until the end of the recovery period. This may seem a bit peculiar, however the theory is a high fibre diet will prevent constipation and thus avoid any straining and subsequent pressure in the surgery area.
- Avoid jogging and other strenuous activities, in particular contact sports.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.
