Rhinoplasty Writtle Essex (CM1): Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape or reconstruct a person's nose. It can be undertaken for personal reasons, because of a birth defect, in order to aid breathing difficulties or following an injury. The two main types of rhinoplasty surgeries are reconstructive and cosmetic. It is the most common of all facial plastic surgeries in Writtle, and post surgery it can help improve breathing and create the effect of balancing a facial appearance.
Reconstructive Rhinoplasty Writtle
Reconstructive rhinoplasty has the main intention of curing breathing issues which stem from external injuries or natural causes. A patient who's got a nasal obstruction as an underlying problem could experience sleep apnoea or have trouble breathing under exercise. This can be caused by a number of reasons and a doctor's examination is necessary to discover the exact cause.
Septal deviation is a major contributing factor in many cases. This is caused by a crooked or pushed-to-one-side midline wall of the nose (the septum). Septorhinoplasty can help to address any underlying issues and realign the septum. Cartilage grafts may be inserted in the nasal passage to strengthen the shape of the nose and septum, in key internal areas.
Reconstructive rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty are usually performed under general anaesthetic by a qualified surgeon, with most people being able to go home the same day. For simpler cases, the surgeon might propose a local anaesthetic, which would be discussed in detail during the consultation phase. The surgery involves making an incision at the base of the nose to access the internal structures. Often, the nasal bones do not need to be broken but are instead reshaped and adjusted to enhance breathing and align the septum. Cartilage may also be removed or altered to strengthen the structure and ensure a uniform shape. To support recovery and maintain the nose's shape, splints or casts may be applied.
Incisions at the base of the nose are strategically placed to minimise scarring, and many patients won't see any visible scars once the wounds have healed. Recovery times are generally similar for all reconstructive rhinoplasty patients, with a recommendation to rest for one or two weeks. This involves avoiding exertion or heavy breathing for at least a week. Ice should be applied to help the area recover, along with a nasal cleaning routine.
There will be a follow-up appointment arranged to take off any splints or cast from your nose, and at this stage, you should be able to return to work and your daily activities. Avoiding contact sports or sports with a risk of accidental impact to the nose (such as ball or racquet sports) is advised for six to eight weeks after the procedure. By this point, the nose should be sufficiently healed to return to your usual activities.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty Writtle
When you choose to reshape your nose for personal reasons, it's known as cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery (or a nose job), which is considered elective surgery. This means that health insurance companies might not cover the procedure or any follow-up consultations. However, it might be possible to have cosmetic rhinoplasty alongside a reconstructive operation that's covered by insurance or the NHS with a recommendation from your GP.
There are many reasons for wishing to undergo cosmetic rhinoplasty in Writtle:
- Reshape a curved or twisted nose.
- Removal of protrusions or humps.
- Reducing the width of the nasal bones.
- Correction of a bulbous nasal tip.
- Reduce or widen the size of the nostril.
- Removal of scars or blemishes.
While cosmetic rhinoplasty can treat all these reasons and more, it's essential to discuss any surgery decisions with your GP initially, before seeing an expert plastic surgeon in Writtle. A customised plan should then be developed for you, considering your individual needs and setting realistic expectations for the surgery's results. It's important to note that not everyone may be suitable for cosmetic rhinoplasty. Factors such as skin and bone structure, medical history, potential adverse reactions, or the risk of worsening the condition must be considered.
Your surgeon will perform a physical examination to evaluate which areas can be altered. This examination helps to determine the thickness of your skin, bone, and cartilage and might also be useful in predicting any changes to your breathing after the surgery. During this process, you'll be asked about what you expect from the procedure and your reasons for wanting rhinoplasty. Feeling a bit self-conscious at this stage is completely normal; after all, most people don't enjoy discussing what they perceive as flaws in themselves. However, it is crucial for the surgeon to see that you've given this matter some serious thought and understand the potential risks and outcomes involved with the surgery.
As with reconstructive rhinoplasty the surgery will take place either under a general or local anaesthetic. After the procedure you will be moved to a recovery room for observation and to allow you to return to being fully awake and aware. Dependant on your circumstances you may be have an overnight stay before being discharged, or you could be allowed to leave after tests and observations are completed.
What to Expect After Rhinoplasty Surgery
It is normal for bruising to appear around the eyes and while this may look worrying, it will reduce over the recovery period. You will be advised to rest for at least seven days after surgery with your head in a raised position to reduce swelling and bleeding. Due to the nature of the surgery there may be a feeling of congestion and of your nose being blocked. It is essential you do not blow your nose or try and forcibly remove any blockage as you may cause damage to the healing process.
There is likely to be some leakage of blood and mucus, and your surgeon will provide a drip-pad to absorb any fluids draining from your nose. This affixed in place with tape and will need to replaced as directed by the post surgery instructions. You may also be asked to follow extra precautions such as:
- Eat a high fibre diet until the end of the recovery period. This might seem a little strange, however the theory is a high fibre diet will prevent constipation and therefore avoid any straining and resulting pressure to the surgery area.
- Do not wear contacts or glasses.
- Try not to laugh or use extreme facial expressions.
- To be careful when brushing your teeth to avoid bumping and movement of the top lip.
- Avoid running, jogging and other strenuous activities, in particular contact sports.
In some cases of rhinoplasty surgery there may be localised swelling that can last up to a year. This is completely normal, but if there are any concerns about the results of surgery and recovery then do not hesitate to contact your surgeon for advice.
If you require further surgery it will not normally be arranged until at least 12 months after any previous rhinoplasty procedures. This is due to the changes the nose can make during this time as it adapts to the initial surgery.

Writtle Rhinoplasty Questions
Just the other week I was reading through the most common questions folks in Writtle ask on the subject of rhinoplasty. Quite a few of you e-mailed helpful questions that I considered to be applicable to this article. The best ones appeared to be, What is rhinoplasty filler? Can rhinoplasty reduce nostril size? When can you breathe after rhinoplasty? How does rhinoplasty financing work? When does rhinoplasty stop hurting? What can you not do after rhinoplasty? How much do rhinoplasty consultations cost? The majority of these queries have hopefully been answered in the preceding paragraphs, if not a rhinoplasty "Q&A" section is the next thing we'll be introducing. Our appreciation goes out to Ronnie Adams, Ayan Lawrence, Edmund Bond and Nevaeh Dale, for finding the time to raise these excellent questions. It was also brilliant to receive questions from Elise Reynolds in Springfield, Aidan Forrest in Roxwell and Serenity Beard in Edney Common.
